Apple today announced major updates to the iPod family at its “The Beat Goes On” special event in San Francisco. The iPod shuffle saw a refresh with new colors and packaging, an all-new iPod nano was introduced, as well as the iPod classic (which replaces the original “iPod” in the company’s lineup), and the all-new iPod touch.
iPod shuffle: The new iPod shuffle is available in several new colors, including a (PRODUCT) RED model, light green, light blue, and light purple. The smallest iPod also received updated, smaller packaging, while storage capacity remains at 1GB for the same price of $79. It will be available soon.
iPod nano: The all-new iPod nano is the same product shown in earlier spy shots, with a 2-inch, 204 pixel per inch, 320x240 resolution screen for video and photo viewing. The all-new design is made from anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel, and is available in five colors: silver, black, blue, green, and a (PRODUCT) RED special edition. It offers 24 hours of audio playback or five hours of video playback on a single charge, and includes three bundled games: Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike. The new iPod nano also receives an enhanced iPod interface with Cover Flow. It will be available in two storage capacities — a silver-only 4GB model for $149, and an 8GB model available in all five colors for $199. “We’ve taken the most popular music player in the world and added stunning video playback just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “The iPod nano just keeps getting better and better with each new generation.” It is available immediately.
iPod classic: Replacing the fifth-generation iPod in the company’s lineup, Apple’s new iPod classic features a new, thinner, all-metal anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel enclosure, the same enhanced iPod interface as the new iPod nano, including Cover Flow, and increased capacity and battery life. “The first iPod put 1,000 songs in your pocket-this new iPod classic can put 40,000 songs in your pocket,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With a thinner, all-metal enclosure and an enhanced user interface, the iPod classic is ideal for people who want to hold everything on their iPod.”
In addition, the iPod classic also comes bundled with three games: Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike. The new 80GB iPod classic is thinner than the fifth-generation 30GB model, and offers 30 hours of music playback and five hours of video playback. It sells for $249. The 160GB iPod classic offers storage for up to 40,000 songs, up to 40 hours of music playback and seven hours of video playback from a single charge, and sells for $349. Both models are available immediately, in both silver and black.
iPod touch: Building on the momentum of the iPhone’s iPod interface, the iPod touch features the same touch screen multi-touch interface found on the iPhone, as well as integrated Wi-Fi, the Safari web browser, a 3.5-inch widescreen display, and a 8mm thin enclosure. The iPod touch offers up to 22 hours of audio playback, up to five hours of video playback, and will be available in both 8GB and 16GB capacities later this month. The 8GB iPod touch is priced at $299, while the 16GB model will sell for $399.
iPhone: Apple also dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone to $399. “The surveys are in and iPhone customer satisfaction scores are higher than we’ve ever seen for any Apple product,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve clearly got a breakthrough product and we want to make it affordable for even more customers as we enter this holiday season.” Apple’s official announcement states that “The iPhone 4GB model will be sold while supplies last,” but does not give any pricing details. Update: Several iLounge readers have reported that Apple is offering the 4GB iPhone model for $299 “While supplies last.”

I wont my nike sensor to work with all the ipods not just the nano. Now I need iphone for touch interface web browsing, ipod classic 160gb for music ( iphone’s 8 gb isn’t enough!) and nano for running. I’d love to hove it all in one device - iphone witha nice big dics and nike + support.
And new colors suck.
but anyway...ipod touch, ipod classic, nano with video - they’ve got me again!

The 160 GB capacity is really nice but would like to see that in the touch style. Also wish Apple would tweak the ipod to enhance the audio (ala Red Wine mod).

iPod Touch is on the way to perfection, BUT:
There is no video out through the headphone jack, only the dock connector. I refuse to carry a dock with me instead of a standard video cable.
However, the screen size probably means I’ll be doing less video to TV.
I love lyrics but don’t have them memorized. As far as I can tell, no lyric capabilities on Touch.
You can’t operate the volume and song skipping without looking. This is the worst change from the 5G, because it is a safety hazard while driving.
Hard drive size is bad. Will get better as it’s been theorized by others to replace the iPod classic.

To all the people complaining about the $200 price drop:
Why does it matter whether the price comes down in two months or in six months or in one year? Did you buy the phone in order to re-sell it in that time? To me what you people are complaining about is the most irrational thing I’ve heard.

Does anyone think Touch users will get a mail client and Google Maps after launch?
I know you can check Gmail through Safari, but having a mail client would really make me go and buy the Touch immediately instead of waiting.

Just got off the phone with AT&T;, I bought an iPhone for my wife 3 days ago and they will refund $200 on my card. Unfortunately not on my phone from 5 weeks ago.

WOW!!!! The last and greatest ipod has 16GB of memory, how… disappointing. This may be the worst move Apple has made to date. They really overplayed their hand w/ this one. People have been waiting for over a year for this, and all they can do is come up with a iphone minus the phone. Real innovative Steve. I used to love this company and their products, but as soon as someone/thing/organization begins to believe their own hype, then its all over. Too bad there isn’t any alternative.

Maybe I’m alone here, but the only thing preventing me from getting the iPod Touch is the fact it’s missing the memo app.... I need something to replace my PDA and I already have my 30GB iPod video, so the iPod Touch would have been perfect if it had some way to write memos…
Why would they think it’d be a good idea to kill the memos app for the iPod… the memos function would completely kill iPhone sales right? Dang I don’t know haha

To echo CaryT’s comment earlier - NO WHITE IPOD?!???!
Sheesh. You know they’ll introduce a white iPod Classic as a special edition. Maybe they’ll do a white U2 version now.
I like the video-centric nature of all the iPods now - paving the way for the future. I think the small capacities on the Touch are a little premature. Yes, with ubiquitous wifi and streaming etc. you can get away with smaller capacity, but only with a music subscription service that hosts your collection, not where you have to download and store the content locally.
Maybe iTunes will progress to knowing your library and allowing you access to it over the network vs. local storage. Then limited capacity wireless enabled devices make some sense.
Couple more years and I’ll be all over whatever the ‘Touch’ is at that point. For now I’ll likely keep my 80GB iPod 5.5 unless I find some sucker to pony up $300 for it so I can buy a new Classic.
Need to go see them to determine if I like the silver, and to see how the black finish lasts.

One more thing - wonder what HTC will have to say about the Touch name?

That new nano makes me want to vomit. It’s so ugly…

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! As much as I would like to get the iPod touch, i really cant because of the storage, I need a fairly descent amouont of storage. I will be most likely getting the iPod classic, the new interface seems user-friendly, 160GB for $350, AMAZING! Even though the new Archos player, 605 model, features a 160GB HDDR with a touchscreen, and a web browser. The only thing I dislike is that you have to purchase pluggins, which include the ability to play common codecs and the Opera web browser.
Overall, great job Apple! You really blew me away. Especially with the pricing. Great job!
...and maybe next time you think about doing a major price drop on one of your products, it involves the Macs.

The new iPod Nano has the same size screen as the old video, plus it’s tiny and cheaper. I also don’t think it’s that ugly. Oh well, since no one likes it, I guess I won’t have trouble getting one for Christmas :D

BWAA HAA HAA HAA!! A big shout out to all the idiots that lined up to buy the iPhone on day one so they could look cool with the latest toy on the block. Now you all like idiots for paying so much. Well done Steve Jobs! You did a great job of screwing the retards!

I’m also frustrated that the itouch didn’t get a hard drive. But, my guess is that driving the disk AND the big screen would cause short battery life. Plus, I’m guessing they want to preserve the thin form factor for the itouch line.
Let’s face it, the industry is in transition to solid state. We’ll all get large solid state memory for an iTouch in due course.
But right now, it is a tough choice (classic or touch). I’m glad I have the iPhone - it will tide me over (as an iTouch) until SSD’s are here that fit itouch with large memory.
For full blown iPod I still rely on my older iPod Photo to hold my whole library.
Yep, we are in transition…

Hey Teen Wolf,
We’re complaining because we feel gypped, ok? You don’t get it because you obviously didn’t buy an iPhone so your little feline brain can’t process what it feels like to lay some hard-earned cash down for a product, do free advertising to friends & family because they want to see it and ask questions about it all the time, put up with initial glitches in software and activation and then see 60 days later the same exact product being sold to others not for 50 or even a 100 bucks less but for a THIRD less. Yeah, I think we have a right to feel a bit miffed.

Really like the Nano form (will fit those of us with larger hands a bit better)and video capacity but was really hoping for a 16g flash (especially because of the video). Seems silly not to have bumped those up with the drop in price of memory.

I knew that the iPhone would drop in price within 2 months and I am positive that people will be be picking up iPhones for $200 in a year. For the new iPods I actually think that the new nano’s styling is pleasant but the colors are horrible and looks like the old ipod’s color except slightly covered in throw up. I was ready to buy the touch iPhone but the price is of by $150 for the 16gig.

Wow, I am so shocked at how personally people are taking the price drop. They priced the phone as high as they thought the market would allow, sold all they could at that price, and then dropped it to sell more. It is just a market, not a personal insult. Apple is a company, they are trying to get all the money they can for the shareholders. If you buy anything the second it comes out, you pay a premium. Maybe you find out later it was more than you wanted to pay, but at the time you happily handed over your credit card and you went to work to show off your cool new phone before anyone else had it. Having an iPhone before anyone else is about status, no one needs an mp3 player with a terrible cell phone plan and wireless internet. You didn’t buy it to be more productive, you wanted to be cool. So you were cool and now the price dropped and more people will have them and you will be less cool. Honestly I would just avoid telling anyone you were enough of a narcissist to buy a $600 mp3 player instead of shouting that you got cheated. Apple wanted your money, they got your money, they are not a philanthropic organization and they don’t have to be “fair.” You made a perfectly “fair” deal, now you want a better one. I know a lot of strange cult Apple fans are ripping their little Apple stickers off their Volkswagens but Apple is a business, it always was. Steve doesn’t know you personally and he isn’t going to give you $200 because you feel bad. Get over it.

The new nano is NOT UGLY- it’s a cool little video box- you guys probably say it’s ugly because you have enough cash to shell out for a high capacity iPod video or the new iPod classic- for those who want video in a smaller package I bet the new nano a beautiful thing. Plus it will look pretty cool in it’s new cases when they come out… all this “ugly nano” talk will vanish.
even though I have my heart set on the 160gb iPodClassic- I still think the new nano is REALLY COOL!
