Apple announces Sept. 5 Special Event

With a Cover Flow-themed widescreen graphic for its invitation, Apple has invited selected members of the media to a September 5, 2007 “Special Event” in San Francisco, California. The graphic, titled “The beat goes on.”, shows a silhouetted iTunes dancer holding a fifth-generation iPod in hand alongside six album covers. As with other major iPod- and iTunes-themed events, the Moscone Center has been selected as the venue, suggesting the need for greater seating capacity than the smaller Mac- and iPod accessory events Apple has staged in months and years past. iLounge editors will be on site to cover the Event live.

MT hit it on the head. There’s your widescreen iPod, kids. 5G curves across the top, 2G nano tapering across the bottom.

I’m thinking the curved top and square bottom more allude to the fact that the new iPod will be running OSX. The curves match the OSX curves perfectly. The invite actually looks like its supposed to be a screen shot of the new iPod itself.

All apple invites have round corners on the top and hard corners on the bottom. It has to be wide-touchscreen iPods! The Click wheel would not be good for cover flow, and the large iPod hasn’t changed in 2 years.

The click wheel would be sufficient for cover flow—spin clockwise to move the covers to the right, spin counter to move to the left. But touchscreen would be nicer.

There’s way too much talk here about rounded and square corners on the invite. Insignificant.
The iPod depicted is a 5th Gen, but they wouldn’t put the new one on the invite.

iLounge reported some iPhones touchscreens have failed. iPods have to be 110% reliable. But part of the screen could be a touchscreen-clickwheel. The clickwheel would disappear if playing a movie.

From Macrumors.com:
the Beatles’ final press release ended with:
When the spinning stops—that’ll be the time to worry, not before. Until then, the Beatles are alive and well and the beat goes on, the beat goes on.
The launch of the Beatles on iTunes has been long expected, with recent interface videos prominently featuring Beatles album art.
I just PRAY that it’s a full touchscreen iPod (phoneless iPhone)

I say they announce new iPods with music already on the iPods. iPods with pre-installed music. The beats goes on and on and on…

Well, that graphic sits within the alphabet where the name Beatles would show up.

Please keep a new, good descent iPod under $400. Maybe an 80-100Gb touchscreen model for $400 or less? That would be nice. I will not pay over $400 for an iPod though. If they do charge over, I will be buying an Archos player or that new touchscreen iPhone-phone player by Samsung or somebody. They look relatively cool. The only thing is they’re flash-based, which means no high-capacity version, yet.

I’m sorry to ask a silly question, but let’s suppose Apple introduces a new line of iPods on September 5th. How soon would they be available in stores?

I’m not sure. One almost sure thing is that we will see new iPods. But I’m sure of one more thing - the action with fake iPods photo was planned by Apple.

I’d settle for a 5.75G iPod with 120-160 GB HD. Forget the touchscreen and forget the widescreen. I’d also like to see 16 GB iPod nanos in the exact same form factor as 2G nano.
