With a Cover Flow-themed widescreen graphic for its invitation, Apple has invited selected members of the media to a September 5, 2007 “Special Event” in San Francisco, California. The graphic, titled “The beat goes on.”, shows a silhouetted iTunes dancer holding a fifth-generation iPod in hand alongside six album covers. As with other major iPod- and iTunes-themed events, the Moscone Center has been selected as the venue, suggesting the need for greater seating capacity than the smaller Mac- and iPod accessory events Apple has staged in months and years past. iLounge editors will be on site to cover the Event live.

I’d like to have coverflow on my 5.5 gen. I’m not interested in a larger hard drvie until they can improve video play time (i.e. the battery).

If new iPods are released, I’d hope to see one with widescreen and Bluetooth (which supports a2dp). And give us a decent sized hard drive. The 4 or 8 gb found in the iPhone is a joke. Also, I want a user replaceable battery. And a pony…

I’d like to see eBooks launched on iTunes.  Waiting anxiously for this functionality on the iPhone.

I don’t see any die-hard fans buying whole Beatles albums from iTS.  Why buy remastered versions, only to have them be lossy?

I can’t wait to see the new iPods!

I hope people boo when Jobs reveal that hideous spy shot iPod, it’s foul. Saying that, I don’t think they would directly show it in the invitation, so perhaps we could hang onto that string of hope. Apple would be stupid imo to release that, too many people hate it already, and too many people want a widescreen touch-screen iPod!

ok the ipod allegedly seems square on the bottom because he his holding it in his hand and his hand is making it look like that…..i really wish people would carefully look at things before making idiotic statements.

I wish you would carefully look at things before making idiotic statements, no one is talking about the ipod in the picture, they are talking about the picture as a whole.

I think it is new iPods w/ video, whether they be touch screen or not. The 30 gb iPods are discontinued in a whole bunch of stores both retail and online, that looks to me like a sign of new video iPods to come.

You guys are hilarious!
The most postings of any article in weeks - and for a poster no less.  A few people here need to get out more - the shape of the ad has a secret meaning, the choice of album covers has a secret meaning, the wording has a secret meaning, what’s in the picture has a secret meaning, what’s not in the picture has a secret meaning, Paul is dead! AHHH!  The suspense is driving you all crazy smile)

The caption reads “The Beat Goes On”, a reference to The Beatles’ final press release, which was issued by Apple Records on April 10, 1970, following the band’s split.

Its Beatles, I’m betting on new iPods in October.

Yes, I know, I am right.

Will this be a live performance?

The iPod nano was introduced two years ago on September 7th.

A major iPhone update is probably in the works. With the phone plugged into my computer, iTunes says it is update and will check for an update on September 5th. Too much of a coincidence, right? Don’t hold your breath on an iPod replica of the iPhone minus the phone. It would be nice but might cannibalize sales. Why make customers pay a premium and get into a 2 year contract just for a device that is exactly like a “new” iPod but can make calls and has a lower storage capacity?

I think wireless is not something Apple will introduce this year. I personally don’t care about wireless, so it’s no upset to me. I think this possibility should be regarded as unlikely.

iTunes checks every week for new updates. Sep. 5 was probably a coincidence.

It’s iPod Season people. Don’t fight it.

Would that really cannibalize sales?  maybe in the short term, but if people got used to the interface and   were accustomed to having the wide-screen iPod, then next time they went to buy a phone they would be all the more likely to buy the nearly identical convergent device.

I said it “might” and maybe you’re right in saying it might be temporary but the iPhone would appear to be too pricey if there was an iPod replica of it that would be roughly half the price assuming the pricing stays the same. Jobs knows what he’s doing, it should all make sense soon.

I beleive Apple will launch 16GB to 30Gb ipods with 3.5plus screen size and Wi-Fi enable. Also 80GB and 120GB will comes with 3inch screen size and possibly Wi-Fi enable too. Ipod nano will comes with 4GB to 16GB capisty and 1.8 or 2"inch screen size and video enable. Hope shuffle will comes with tiny color screen.

it’s true opinions are like butts (clean version) everyone’s got one.

like the consensus I hope for touchscreen, larger screen, removable battery, and of course a pony!

Honestly, a new ipod with widescrean and touchscrean is really just an iphone without the phone. Whats the point??

It will be very hard to resist a thin, widescreen, touchscreen iPod.
We’ll see.
