Apple announces Sept. 5 Special Event

With a Cover Flow-themed widescreen graphic for its invitation, Apple has invited selected members of the media to a September 5, 2007 “Special Event” in San Francisco, California. The graphic, titled “The beat goes on.”, shows a silhouetted iTunes dancer holding a fifth-generation iPod in hand alongside six album covers. As with other major iPod- and iTunes-themed events, the Moscone Center has been selected as the venue, suggesting the need for greater seating capacity than the smaller Mac- and iPod accessory events Apple has staged in months and years past. iLounge editors will be on site to cover the Event live.

My wife (not an ipod cult member) saw the invitation and was like: “oh, I bet they are making a satalite radio option. ‘Goes on…’?”
I agree with this or (since apple removed the 8GB nano’s today) will be increasing the size and (more importantly to the invite) bumping the battery life…..
Nano is the longest battery life after all…..

The value of being able to update all of my podcasts via wifi is huge…..
The beat goes on def refers to “the beatles go on itunes” but may also be a throw off….

I hope they keep the clickwheel.
I don’t wanna be sliding my cheetoh dust covered fingers over a beautiful iPod screen

Anyone suggesting a flash based capacity of more than 16GB is being grossly unrealistic, do you have any idea how much costs to buy 64GB of NAND? Around $2000.
128GB…just lol.
I’m disappointed that the 5G iPod is featured on the invitation. I fear we’re just going to see a fairly incremental update to the existing iPod form factor for the full size models. I think Apple have realized people would baulk at iPods functionally identical to iPhones but lacking the telecoms features, at half the price. People would just buy the iPod then a cheap phone.

It’s defo a widescreen ipod. If you look at coverflow on an iphone, it only shows 3 x album art on either side of the selected album. This invite shows exactly that. It will have touch controls, but a mac os generated clickwheel.

If you squint, the person has an uncanny resemblance to Elvis. Coincidence?....I think not ladies and gentlemen! Reliable sources suggest that this meeting will have live performances by Elvis, and the Beatles. Mr. Jobs has done it again!!

ah, the speculation…the suspense…thanks to WhoCares for injecting some humour, and to urbanslaughter for the first crazy rumour which might actually have some merit (“the beat goes on” quote reffering to the Beatles final press release).
Why bicker now kids? The point is we are almost certainly going to get (a) new iPod(s), if not new iPods AND the digitally remastered Beatles catalogue on Sept. 5th, so be happy! Whining about the new ipods can happen after we know what they look like, not over what they might look like.
Also, I’m one of those people who would consider buying the Beatles’ catalogoue from iTunes, as my Dad has their entire collected works on LP, which i enjoy at home, but I don’t have the materials and quite honestly counldn’t be bothered ripping them into digital format. Finally, to steve…I don’t know about you, but my dream iPod looks exactly like an iPhone without the phone, and with a better battery and a massive hard drive. That’s my two bobs worth, let’s all look forward to the 5th…

I figured it out - it’s a new touchscreen Beatles Ipod. and to christen the event he’s going to have lorne michaels come out and offer them $3,000 to perform live - then Paul & Ringo emerge from the audience where they were disguised as media type folks, then from behind a backdrop comes George & Paul - the audience is awestruck - ya see with all the cash Jobs has made off the Ipod, he harvested the DNA of George Harrison & John Lennon and had them cloned for just this one event. They play one song, realize they still hate each others guts (Paul calls Yoko a name - it gets ugly)they go get the three grand from Lorne Michaels and decide not to give Ringo any,

Look everyone, it could very well be (I HOPE) a widescreen iPod that looks just like the iphone with a huge hard drive! This would be great! The people who buy the iphone are a TOTALLY different market than those who buy ipods.
This iphone is not meant to aim at the ipod market, and ipod sales will not suffer from it- nor will iphone sales suffer from a new ipod that looks just like it.
The iphone is completely it’s own device. the web surfing internet capability alone makes it stand on it’s own.
The smartest thing to do would be to make an iPod wide, touch screen that looked like an iphone with a 100gb hard drive that was scaled down to the starndard size of a current ipod. This would be golden.

hope its the widescreen ipod, based on all the parts developed for the iphone. AND with that 100 GIG Toshiba hard drive that was announced some months back. I am fed up with having one third of my iTunes on my Pod.

The announcement will be for a new generation iPod. I went to Best Buy the other day to buy my first iPod and they said they don’t have any in stock except for floor samples and they can’t order any. They gave me the number to another BB in the area and they told me the same thing. Out of stock, floor samples only, can’t order any and Apple is making an announcement on 9/5. A BB rep said they are launching an iPod with a screen that works like the iPhone.

Madonna’s new song that is supposed to be released in the coming weeks is called “The Beat Goes On”. I am sure it is related to it. They will announce that iTunes will have the exclusive single for purchase before you can buy it anywhere else.
Of course I am sure they will announce a new iPod too, the timing is right.

ok, im thinking a Beatles iPod in the works…
“The Beat Goes On” thing is right after the Beastie Boys, which is where The Beatles would be alphabetically.
Also, the “beat goes on” cover has flowers all over it… remember FLOWER POWER the time of the beatles???
Plus, Apple has brought Paul, Ringo, John, and soon George onto iTunes, i think its time for all The Beatles TOGETHER!!!
Oh yeah, and a widescreen iPod does sound awesome!
