Numerous reports indicate that Apple and AT&T are investigating a rash of iPhone 3G connection problems affecting some handsets. A San Francisco Chronicle article tells the story of one iPhone user, who claims to have had ongoing connection problems with the 3G. “I was driving down Folsom Street in San Francisco, and I got a dropped call 10 times. I get dropped calls just standing in one place,” said Stephen Yarbrough, a 34-year-old accountant. “I’m extremely annoyed, but I’m hopeful a software update will fix it.” Later in the piece, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said that while customer concerns were being looked into, it is difficult to know if they are widespread or related to individual circumstances. “How a device performs in individual situations depends on circumstances like where you are in the 3G coverage, how close you are to a cell site. Things like terrain and buildings all come into play,” Siegel said. “I’m not denying that people are having a less than satisfactory experience, but overall, the phone is doing great.”
CNet staffer Tom Krazit points to an Apple discussion thread on the topic, noting that iPhone 3G users are having trouble connecting, and staying connected, to 3G networks, with the phone switching between 3G and EDGE networks even when sitting still. In addition, Krazit notes that international iPhone 3G users are reporting similar problems, suggesting the issue lies with the handset as opposed to the network. Finally, Nomura analyst Richard Windsor has said in a note to clients that the problem may stem from an immature chipset from Infineon. “We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain Infineon is the 3G supplier,” Windsor wrote, adding that because the problems are likely to be embedded in the low-level software and the chipset, a firmware upgrade is unlikely to fix the problem. YOU FOOLS. The 3G phones are working perfectly fine. Steve Jobs simply can’t keep his finger off the KILL SWITCH!!! Every few minutes he feels the need to press the big red button on his desk and kills your service. The KILL SWITCH has become his crack addiction.
Mine is working fine.

I have gone from one end of the city to the other in Austin, TX and watched my iPhone 3G stay in 3G only 20% of the time, 1-2 bars at best. All the while my friend’s Nokia 3G phone on the same network stays on 3G the entire time.
Bars, reception, network issues, dropped calls aside, my phone is hardly ever in 3G and barely has a signal when it is, and my friend’s (and other friends and coworkers) non-iPhone is in 3G the entire time with no reported dropped calls or issues.
Ironically, in San Antonio (the world headquarters of AT&T;), my phone performed quite well on the highway and in downtown. I attribute this to the amazing network in San Antonio, not the phone. When you go somewhere other than AT&T;‘s world headquarters, the phone’s shortcomings with reception show through.
The iPhone 3G has a serious problem, and I cannot believe Apple was aware of this problem before the phone’s launch. Even carriers are saying that they tested the phone prior to its release… I just don’t understand….

This makes NO SENSE at all-but all the reports here list 16GB phones as the problem.
My wife and I both have 8GB and have had NO problems-for me even the switch from 3G to E seems fine.
My phone is jailbroke and her’s is not.
It just seems like there must be some connection-though with the wide geographical areas you people reporting problems are from-it doesn’t seem likely. Bad Batch maybe?

No issues here at all. I live in South Florida. Only a few times have I ever noticed it switch to 3G. No dropped calls because of this either. Very solid speed with the 3G, almost as fast as WiFi.

I have connection issues as well all over. I’ll be sitting in one place and the call will drop out. I am heading overseas to Taiwan in a few weeks and eager to test the 3G over there and compare if it is the phone or the network.

I live in central new jersey. According to att I’m in one of the best coverage areas in the country. Yet with my iPhone 3g I’m lucky to get two bars. Droped calls on a daily basis. I even switched the sim but to no avail. My first iPhone never had these problems.
Apple needs to address this while I’m still a customer.

i am having 3g dropped call and data connect issues in ventura county, california. forcing to edge improves the call performance but is not a preferable solution as it limits functionality.

I thought it was just me, but my old razor was a much better pure phone. I used to be able to make and receive calls from my home, now it rings and instantly drops the call. I hope they find a fix for this soon.

Love the iPhone, but I am also experiencing the same connection problems. I can be sitting next to my in-home wireless transmitter and get a poor data connection. Phone service has never been great in my home, but now I am limited to using the phone at one end of the house only.
Apple’s solution is to figure out a test to find out which phones are faulty, and replace them, with no questions or challenges. But, only once they fix the chip problem.

I live in the middle of Manhattan and I get dropped calls and low bars everywhere. This is sooooo bad. Apple’s products keep getting worse and worse.

I’m with T-Mobile and have almost no problems reaching anyone. However, I have three friends who are experiencing major call failed issues. They are all with ATT and each has a different phone. (iPhone 3G, Motorola, and Sony) regardless of battery charge or signal status, they are all unreachable. Whether from another cell or land line. The calls are dropped and dropped incoming or out going. Each of them have said “well maybe my battery is lower than it shows” or “I think there’s something wrong with the speaker”.
I imagine it is something to do with the incredible increase to the ATT network since everyone and their brother jumped on the iPhone bandwagon…?

I just bought the iPhone yesterday making the bold step to switch from Verizon to AT&T;, having had done my research I decided that the difference in coverage between the two companies was close enough to justify my decision to switch to the AT&T;network. After all, the company I work for gives discounted coverage on Verizon. I am sad to say that immediately I noticed the difference between Verizon and Cingualar/AT&T;‘s network. On the 3G coverage map, my house is inside the welcome dark orange “best” service blotch, which is certainly the case if I lived outside. In my house I have a modest 2 bars, which seems to fluctuate between no service and 2 bars. I understand that if you live in a bunker you are likely to loose service, but my room has 5 windows, my desk is right next to a window. There is no reason that my coverage should be this shoddy. From this forum, I have reason to believe that the problem is not one that can be fixed with a firmware update so what am I to do? Cancel my contract before the grace period runs up (I hope there is a grace period
). I didn’t like Verizon, but at least they had service in the majority of western mass.

I live in the greater Portland Oregon area and just switched from Sprint on a Treo 700p to a new Iphone 3G on AT&T;. I found immediatley that the coverage in my home is very different than Sprint. I always had coverage on sprint and can’t remember the last dropped call. I have an office in my home and the Iphone flucutates from 4 bars to no service while I am sitting at my desk - several times per day. I even went to the expense of adding a cell phone repeater (one designed for the new Iphone) and still get the same results. It is very difficult to carry on an in home business when your cell phone doesn’t give reliable service. I hope this gets fixed soon or back to Sprint I go.

yes. bad service. I just gave up a motorola that had excellent service. It was using Edge. I hope this is something AT&T;can fix. Recalling iPhones would suck. It’s a fantastic handset it could be an amazing phone. (Should be.)
Whatever the problem, whoever’s problem, I hope they fix it soon.

I live in Forest Hills, NY. I live in a tiny, 414 sqr ft apartment. I see my signal bar ranging from 1 bar to full bar at different time and location of my apt.
Often, the person I talk to to tells me that my reception sounds real bad, but I have full bar signal! AND the person I talk to would not be able to hear me while I hear him/her fine. It happens sooooo often. It’s driving me nuts and I don’t talk on the phone much. I just got the phone 5 days ago!!! I am going Apple store and demand for a new phone which I am praying the problem can be resolved! Wish me luck.

I travel all over the country. I bought my phone the day before I went to San Diego, CA (I live in Green Bay, WI) (mind you this was 1 1/2 weeks ago) I had HORRIBLE service in a 3G area of San Diego then came home for a day and off to houston, tx still not great service there. One thing I noticed coming on and off airplanes is that when I switch back to transmiting mode it would stay on “no service” a VERY long time as other people were already powered up and talking on their phone I would still be waiting for bars to come up. Very ANNOYING! Upset I left my VERY reliable Verizon network. Going to continue to test out the Iphone in my home network until the end of the week then going back to verizon and getting a blackberry.

Yes, I am having frequent 3G problems, despite the upgrade to 2.0.2. In fact, it seemed to have no affect whatsoever.
I am forced to turn off 3G because it won’t switch to Edge when 3G is too low.
It’s very annoying because accessing 3G was the reason I upgraded from my old iPhone. Now that I’m back on Edge, what was the point????
Urgh!!!!!

It’s the 3G network. I live near downtown Houston and went through three different 3G phones from three different manufacturers and 70% of my calls were dropped or distorted. I had to downgrade to EDGE and I get less dropped calls, but still get some distortion. I was with Verizon before AT&T;and never had a dropped call. I wish I would have stayed with them!

Its not just iPhones… i have a WM smartphone pro and have to constantly restore my connection to default settings and then it only lasts about 2 days until i have to do it again… and it all started when the iphone 3GS was released on the AT&T network… i live in downtown Baltimore which is one of the cities that AT&T say has “perfect” network coverage and access to 3&4G;... but i can’t even get a call from my wife in Iraq or receive emails on my phone… its total BS!!

I have a 16gig. 3g Iphone worked fine until I installed the new 3g update. I have since had all or most of the connection problems listed on this site. Reset to factory settings did not help and lost all of my apps in the process. Att & T not responsive to problems at all.
