Following a redesign of the Voice Memos icon for the sixth-generation iPod nano, Apple has unexpectedly changed the Voice Memos icon for iOS 4.2 devices including the iPhone and iPod touch. The new icon discards the previous photo-realistic style microphone for a simpler symbol-on-gradient treatment that more closely matches the Phone, Messages, and iPod applications, an unusual step backward in icon design given that other applications received more detailed icons when Apple introduced the iPad, as well as Retina Display-bearing iPhone and iPod touch devices. Apple is expected to release iOS 4.2 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in November.

Some of the stuff from the beta of 4.2 makes me think they were developing 4.1 & 4.2 in parallel. Now it remains to be seen how well they unite them (hopefully by the time we hit iOS 5.X the OS will be device agnostic and universal for any and all iOS devices much like Mac OS)

(@ Josh) “Agreed.” The old icon looked better. It seems like Apple would have stuck with the old icon, since it’s look would be enhanced by the retina displays showcased on new iOS4 devices.

Looking at the Voice Memo and Compass icons side-by-side, you wouldn’t think they were on the same device. The new icon cheapens iOS devices.

I feel exactly the opposite about the icon design, but that’s just my opinion. It seems that the classic, old-timey look of icons like voice recorder and compass take away from the modern look and feel of the iOS interface

Who’s in charge of icons at Apple lately?
This, and iTunes 10 are disasters (if you can claim icons as disasters)
So inconsistent with normal Apple quality. And they are a true mix of artistic, and skimpy bathroom sign bits. Seems that someone at Apple’s internal bureau of icons must be on vacation

Right, I was slightly irritated by this to the point that I made a temporary solution, you can add the page to home screen, rename “Voice Memos” and it’ll create a faux voice memos icon which will look right again
