Apple contacts BusinessWeek writer over iPhone 3G article
Following a posting yesterday expressing confusion and disappointment over AT&T’s iPhone 3G plans and pricing, and its decision to charge separately for SMS text messaging, BusinessWeek writer Arik Hesseldahl was contacted by Apple regarding the article. Hesseldahl writes, “So Apple called today, a little annoyed with my portrayal yesterday of AT&T’s iPhone pricing.” Hesseldahl defends his position on the non-inclusion of SMS messaging, saying, “Is this a mistake on AT&Ts part? I certainly think so.” He goes on to suggest that the extra charges for messaging will lead to greater adoption of native and web-based instant messaging solutions, while noting that AT&T is not alone in its need to streamline its wireless pricing plans to make them easier to understand and more convenient for consumers.

Count me in the same boat as many of you. I was all set to get a new 3G, and my Dad was waiting to take over my 1G. I could live with them upping the fees for data because the 3G network is supposedly faster so I’d be getting better service for the higher price; but what is the justification for TAKING AWAY the SMS service? Paying an extra $5 a month for something I already have makes no sense. Looks like I’ll be shopping ebay for a 1G for my Dad. I have about 5 or 6 iPods around the house, and keep buying them because the new one has better/different features that I like. This is the first time that I WILL NOT consider buying a new upgraded product from Apple. So how does Apple benefit from this? Sorry Steve, you didn’t think this one through!

I am staying with my iphone (2G) until I can travel to france this spring to get a unlocked phone. Then it is T-mobile USA and good bye ATT. They have bent me over for the last time.

Why wait til France? There are HUNDREDS of unlocked 1G on Ebay right now-and they DO WORK with T Mobile.

i can’t really comment too much on the 3g, because I already hate my original iphone and would never consider the 3g, especially with this nonsense. I am waiting out the end of my contract and saying goodbye to att. As far as I am concerned, the iphone is a subpar phone and a subpar Ipod. I already have two Ipod videos, which I think are way better than the Iphone or touch (minus the gimmicks) and there are many better phones out there than the Iphone. The whole mms thing alone is nuts. My 8 yr old nephew sends me mms messages on his $30 phone that I can’t receive. Great.
