Apple could unveil new iPod ‘as early as June’

Banc of America Securities expects Apple to introduce a new iPod “as early as June” to help increase demand which is expected to slow this quarter. The firm forecasts that iPod shipments will decrease to 4.8 million units in Apple’s fiscal third quarter ending in June from 5.3 million units last quarter.

In a research note to clients, Banc of America Securities said that its model incorporates “some seasonal softness,” and with flat revenue guidance from Apple’s last financial conference call, “we imagine that investors are looking to flat to slightly down MP3 sales, and strength in CPUs.”

How about a 5G full-sized iPod that looks like a mini (only with a color screen)?

Posted by Galley on April 22, 2005 at 12:26 PM (CDT)

According to what I’ve read, the great unveiling will be a new scratch-n-sniff iPod shuffle that will come in corresponding colors.  Yellow=lemon, orange=orange, purple=grape, green=apple (of course), blue=blueberry, brown=chocolate, and black=licorice.

Luxpro is supposed to counter with a Super Shuffle that is not only scented, but flavored as well.  They’ll advertise it with the tagline “Suck On This Apple!”

man, it’d rock if the bluetooth ipod was ready in june.

all i ask is 80GB HD, Color screen (photo), maybe video (not so much for me) and some cool little software enhancements…

I don’t think that’s too much to ask for :)

How about a little bit slimmer 30 Gb with a color screen.  with Integrated wi-fi much like the PSP.  Giving anyone with a wireless connection instant access to the Music Store.  AND SOME NEW GAMES!!!! In the name of all that is holy!!!  Maybe light video.

Some improved recording functions would be good. The iPod’s capable of recording up to 96KHz, 320 Kbit/s, in 5 channels (according to the Wolfson specs), but Apple limits it to 8KHz.

Dear Apple,

I will buy 2 80GB iPods, color screen or not, the instant you make them available.

D’oh!  I forgot an optical output!

Posted by Galley on April 23, 2005 at 12:17 AM (CDT)

New iPods with:
-color screens
-80GB hard drive
-comes in a varity of colors
-video capable (since some camera have video capability)
-photo transfer directly from camera to iPod and viewable on the screen immediately after
-recording direct onto iPod from a stereo or other portable player
-battery life 20 to 24 hours
-Notes section limited only by the size of the hard drive instead of the current 4k.
-user EQ
-user replacable hard drive
-user replacable battery
-All audiobooks stored in a separate section so that none will play with the music.  Currently they must be bookmarkable (m4b)not to play in the mix. We won’t have to convert them anymore.

Well, I think I got everything but I don’t think this is too much to ask.

here’s my thoughts…

could happen :-
- ipod line streamlined…
- no more mono ipod, the “photo” or “colour” will be the standard
- ipod “colour” will be in 30gb/60gb/80gb sizes
- longer battery for 2.5 gen “colour” ipod’s (via new chipset from portal) (2nd gen ipod colour already fixes some headphone noise imput/output issues)
- mini gets another size bump, plus longer battery life via new portal chipset
- upgraded itunes software (playlists within playlists etc…)
- firmware enhancements for above plus crossfade, plus “stop” control plus other bug fixes for whole ipod line (sneaky back door way to get security enhanceents without calling attention to the extra security for itunes/ipod)
- 3 games to start on ipod colour (and maybe old mono’s but unlikely) via macromedia flash firmware update, more games in future via itunes store

big big guess, what “may” happen :-
- NEW ipod video, widescreen like PSP, scroll wheel/buttons via touchscreen interface, plays mpeg/divx AND QT movie trailers in itunes, plays new QT7 encoded movies from newitunes movie service launched fully in autumn, small selection available now, downloads will be less 400mb for full movie
- bluetooth headphones support

what i think won’t happen…
- no colour screen for mini, pricepoint may be too close to reg ipod
- no video for current version of ipod colour
- no builtin FM transmitter, they leave that to 3rd party like griffin/belkin

my personal opinion is that the brand recognition of the ipod is so strong (white face/shiney back) and ipod mini (rounded corners/available in colours), that i think apple will not touch that with a 10ft barge pole…  more over enhance the ipod line and strengthen the ipod family’s recognition

just my 2p’s worth…

good thoughts me101,

i don’t think the 80 GB will be released without dropping the 30/60 increments…  The toshiba (i think) drive manufacturers have made advancements that allow 40GB per drive platter… making a slim 40GB and a fullsized 80GB model attainable.  That would be hot.

Now about the video…  I’m not seeing the iTunes music store selling videos anytime soon.  Too much red tape there… They are in over their heads as it is with the music biz. I’m sure they don’t want anything to do with the movie market.  Maybe in the future, I could see something like that happening.  But for now, what if you could watch the already available MUSIC VIDEO’s on iTunes- on your iPod!  That would be an easy step I think.  There is already hundreds of free music videos available in the ITMS, why not?  They could sell them for 99cents to download.  But I still don’t see this happening with the latest iPod revision.

Oh BTW, expect low “initial quantities” available at the launch.  It’s a marketing tool that has played itself out all too much in the past.  So you’ll have to wait 3 months to get yours.  ;-)

I reckon the box will still be made of cardboard though.

Thanks guys - you really do give me a good laugh.

There’s a rumour of a new Apple product and all the fan-boys reach for the Kleenex.

Whatever they release (if indeed they do) I will guarantee you this: it’ll leave you wanting more.

Apple never seem to release anything that has even half the functionality you can get from other devices - but then, with saps queuing round the block for whatever iWantOne they release - why should they?

And what’s annoying is that it’s not cos the chips etc in the iPod couldn’t do a whole lot more - it’s just that Apple chose not to give it to you.

Must try harder Mr Jobs if you ever want any of MY money again….

i wonder how apple will follow up with the shuffle?  i think the design is already perfect, besides lower price for more memory or longer batter life, what could they possibly do?

and no, we dont need a screen

Posted by khyberny on April 24, 2005 at 11:36 PM (CDT)

Well the shuffle does lack something important found in most of today’s mp3 players… I think a SCREEN is what they call it :)

But then if the shuffle got a screen, they couldn’t call it an ipod shuffle anymore, ‘cause you could do more than just shuffle… Maybe they’ll call it the…

“iPod MicroMini”

I hope they don’t do too much that I’d regret buying my 20gig just a few months ago… But then again it already does everything it needs to do… Play music, right? :)

What I can’t wait for is ten technology’s flexdock for full sized ipods… And yes, I did get a reply from them saying that I should wait for its launch next month :)

Just something to look out for…

I am certain Apple will cancel the 20gb, make the 30gb $300 and the 60gb $400.

They may come up with something completely new—maybe more of a pda/iPod hybrid—which would take the $450+ spot, but I really see Apple in a period of refinement for the classic white iPods.

It is possible they cancel the 4gb mini and lower the 6gb to $200, perhaps make an 8gb mini?

I really doubt this will happen, but they might keep the 20gb at $300, and offer a color mini at the same price.

If they dropped the price of shuffles to $80 there would be no reason not to; people would just buy them on a whim, so I could see that happening.

This is pretty much all speculation, but it’s fun to think about. Except the first one; I’m positive about that.

It won’t happen, but I’m still going to hope that they’ll release an LCD wired remote for the iPod; that would be amazing.

I would love to see the next Ipod with an optional lcd remote so I can sit on my couch scroll through songs and play my ipod through my stereo
