Apple intros 30GB iPod photo, Camera Connector, drops 40GB, prices
In addition to updated iPod minis, Apple today announced a revamped iPod photo family, including a new “slim” 30GB model for $349 and a 60GB model for $449 - a $150 price drop from its previous level. Apple’s 30GB model loses 10 Gigabytes, $150, 0.5 ounces of weight and 0.12” thickness from the earlier 40GB iPod photo, while the 60GB model remains the same size. Both the 30GB and 60GB iPod photos are available immediately. Apple is also promising updated iPod photo software for a March release to include “new slideshow transitions” that can be picked “on the go.”
Both of the new models feature the ability to import photos directly from your digital camera via an optional new iPod Camera Connector for instant viewing and slide show playback on iPod photo. The Connector is expected to be available in late March for $29.
The new iPod photo models no longer include iPod photo Docks, iPod photo AV cables, or cases, and more surprisingly, Apple has also apparently dropped both FireWire cables and FireWire Power Adapters from the iPod photo boxes. Each iPod photo now includes only a single USB 2.0 cable and a USB Power Adapter, recently reviewed on iLounge, for wall power charging. Each of the other items is available separately.
On a related note, Apple has discontinued the 40GB fourth-generation iPod (previously $399) and the 40GB iPod photo ($499). The fourth-generation 20GB iPod remains at a $299 price point.

Not sure if anyone has noted this yet, but the camera connector WILL work with the OLD photo models. An Apple Vice President confirms it in a New York Times report:
http://www.nytimes.com/cnet/CNET_2100-1041_3-5586848.html?
It only makes sense as apparently the “new” photo models are exactly the same as the new ones except for the included accessories and prices.

I bought a 60 GB iPod photo from Amazon.com earlier today - payed $449. The web page says it includes the dock, case, firewire cable, etc. But, I wonder if this is true and my iPod will arrive without the extra’s. I can’t find anything on their web site that indicates the old 60 GB from the new. Will ship within 2-3 days - the suspense is killing me. Ideas?

I bought the ipod mini last week - Apple offers price protection for 10 calendar days (from shipment - not sure what that means) on Apple.com purchases. You just send an email from their website with your order number and get a refund. Also if your order is still “open” you can cancel it and buy the new model.

I ordered the 60 GB Ipod photo today - I didn’t scroll down far enough to see the “old model” offered as a special. Is the 60GB really completely unchanged? I also ordered the dock and AV cable, so I would be better off with the old. I didn’t realize the old ones came with all that stuff. I really hate the way Apple does business…

I feel the 40GB 4th Gen is the best one, Why would they discontinue it. The next size for me is the 60GB photo and its just to big. All me accessories:
proclip for car
proclip for bedroom
EVO2 skin
will not fit the 60GB if my 40GB fails
I have the BestBuy service plan for five years.
Will others be introduced this year?
Very Upset with Apple’s decision!

Poor little Ali,
I’m in the same spot. They don’t know anything at my local Best Buy. In fact, they are still selling the 40GB photo at full retail. The Best Buy website, doesn’t list the photos at all. I called the website order number and they don’t know anything either.
I read an interview with Steve Jobs in which he stated the new minis would be in stores this weekend, which makes me wonder about the photos being available then too. Of course he could have meant the Apple Store, where they already have the 30GB photo.

Buy.com is selling 40GB 4G for $323, and Amazon for $349, plus they come with a Dock….I really don’t need the Photo option and is a color screen even important on an MP3 Player? I don’t whether to buy one of the remaining 40GB 4Gs or wait for the new 30GB Photo.
I did want to buy one at BestBuy to get their extended warranty. Are there any other differences on the 30GB Photo as compared to the 40GB non-Photo? The battery is the same isn’t it, and I expect Apple will support the 40GB 4G? Also, when I was looking at Bestbuy a couple of weeks ago, a sales person says iPods have the same rules as laptops….14 day return policy and a 15% restocking fee so returning an iPod you just bought may not be worth it if you have to pay a 60 dollar restocking fee. Will all of the 4G cases like Contour Showcase fit the new 30GB Photo?

go to apples online store, go to sale, 40 gig ipod photo (includes dock, firewire, tv cables and case) for 379. if you’re a student like i am, its only 349!!!! That is the bargain of the century. if you ask me. with student discount the the 30 gig ipod is 319 or something like that. add the dock (40), the firewire (20), the tv cable (20?) and teh case (30) adn youre spending more money for lower capacity unit with the same accessories. if you can update the firmware, like the person at the mac store told me i would be able to, it makes no sense not to buy this.

Sometimes procrastination works. I was just running out of space on my 3g 30GB iPod and was looking at the 60GB photo when the price suddenly dropped. I ordered it last Wednesday, it was engraved and shipped (FEDEX)from Shangai, China Thursday evening and arrived at 9:00 AM Monday.
The display is great and it fits right into my old docking station and my inmotion Altec Lansing speakers. I’m glad I diddn’t get the other useless acessories that were dropped.

I should have waited for the price drop, nonetheless I’m very happy with my 60-color.

I recently got a 4GB ipod mini. The 2nd generation with 18 hours playback time. I have charged it more than 12 hours the first time but the battery lasted less than 18 hours, I guess just about 12 hours or maybe it depends on the usage which it what OEM always say but anyhow I am just a music listener, nothing funky like storing stuff.. just dun understand why the batt life is so short when is says it can last up to 18 hours

Three weeks ago, while visiting the local Best Buy, they were selling out the 40 gb photo for $379. I went ahead and got that instead of waiting for them to get the new 30 gig photo in. I got 10 extra gigs, plus mine came with the dock and all the cables.
I suggest looking around for deals like this if you’re that hung up on getting the dock and everything else (as I was).
