Apple intros fifth-generation iPod with video playback

As widely expected, Apple today introduced the long-rumored new iPod with video playback capabilities. The new fifth-generation device, which is up to 30% thinner than the previous full-size iPod, features a larger 2.5-inch color screen (320 x 240 resolution, 260,000 colors) that can play videos, including music videos, video Podcasts, home movies and television shows, in addition to displaying album artwork and photos. It supports MPEG4 and H.264 video at 30 fps and also sports TV out. (See our report on iTunes 6 for further details on available video content). The new iPod is available in both white and black versions in 30GB ($299) and 60GB ($399) capacities. Both models will begin shipping next week.
“The new iPod is the best music player ever—it’s 30 percent thinner and has 50 percent more storage than its predecessor—yet it sells for the same price and plays stunning video on its 2.5-inch color screen,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Because millions of people around the world will buy this new iPod to play music, it will quickly become the most popular portable video player in history.”
The new iPod uses Apple’s well-known Click Wheel and Dock Connector, so the majority of third-party accessories will be compatible with the device. However, its extended headphone port has been removed, so while headphones will work, other top-mounting accessories such as remote controls and most FM transmitters will not. New products are forthcoming to fulfill anticipated demand. The 30GB model offers up to 14 hours of battery life for music playback, while the 60GB model features up to 20 hours. The 30GB iPod is good for two hours of video playback and the 60GB model is good for three hours of video watching.
Apple told iLounge that the fifth-generation iPod features greatly enhanced audio recording capabilities, and improved playback capabilities. The company said the new iPod sounds as good or better than the iPod shuffle, which Apple considers its prior gold standard in terms of sound quality. Good news for podcasters is the ability to record in either 22KHz mono or 44KHz stereo. The device still records in WAV format, which has to be converted to MP3 or AAC, however.
Both models come with earphones, a USB 2.0 cable and a case, but Apple has also introduced a new Universal Dock ($39) for the fifth-generation iPod that features IR support to work with a new wireless Apple Remote ($29). It also allows for USB 2.0 syncing, variable line out—confirmed by Apple representatives for certain on this Dock—and S-video connections.
You can view more live hands-on shots of the new iPod on iLounge’s flickr page and the event’s photo gallery with over 300 photos. iLounge Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Horwitz will have his first reactions up shortly in the form of a special podcast.

Just to let everyone know… the first iPod that will be 100% video compatable won’t be an iPod at all. The iPod is a MUSIC player, and this model (5G) will probably be as good as it gets when it comes to both music and some video. The first portable video machine (when Apple makes it) won’t be called an iPod, Apple will find a name for it and it will be an i-Something. To accomadate a bigger screen, this machine will be larger than the iPod (between the size of the iPod and a PSP), and Apple will make it way more expensive than an iPod. It will be video-first, music second, like a portable DVD player (you can put CD’s in a portable DVD player to make it play music).
Now for you stupid people that bought 4G’s or Nano’s 2 weeks ago and are now complaining. You should have seen that when the Nano came out a month ago, that Apple would incorperate the same technology into their full-sized iPod. Apple did it before with the 4G’s when they took the click wheel from the Mini.
Apple had been developing this iPod with the Nano for some time now (other than color screen, the 4G’s and Mini’s didn’t change much in a year in a half, did they?). THIS IS THE NEW BONA FIDE IPOD. It wasn’t rushed into production, or Apple could have waited and released it at Thanksgiving, not now. People have also been complaining about its size. It’s hard to pack 60 GBs in a frame smaller than those that used to hold 20. If you see the Nano and realize that it holds 4 GBs max, and then see the iPod which can hold 15 times as much memory, you’ll see the new iPod is a marvel in itself.
I ordered a 60 GB black one yesterday and can’t wait. I wasn’t sure at first, but I researched on this and discovered that this will be the best technology offered for at least through the next year. No one has invented batteries that will improve the 2-3 hour video life, and the technology that will enable them to make the iPod considerably smaller. Apple has truly used the best technology to date in this great new iPod.
If you are debating on buying this iPod: BUY IT NOW BEFORE EVERYONE HAS ONE!

The psp is great and all but its ment(sic) for playing games.
Someone should tell Sony that. They just released a Japanese firmware update that allows PSP users to utilize feeds from Sony’s Location Free TV system, using the PSP’s wireless capabilities beamed from a central router in one’s home. Is it any good? Beats me. But it’s Sony trying to prove that the PSP is more than a glorified Gameboy, which is better than nothing considering how SLOW Sony has been in getting new game titles to market.
Plus, DOESN’T Sony own a bunch of movie and entertainment properties that can and will get the UMD treatment? Not very gaming like, it seems to me.
The PSP is more than a simple handheld gaming device, just as the video iPod is more than a portable music player. Just because you have much love for Apple doesn’t mean that others like Sony aren’t in the game as well. Plus, movies on the PSP REALLY DO look darn good; it’s too bad for them that they don’t have a content distribution system like iTMS.

damn,
i wanted an ipod with a round screen, not circular but spherical, like a bollock. And i must admit, ipod batteries…i could get more of a charged by shoving an electrode into a cats butt-pucker.But…

So who will make a dock connector that will allow all the current accessories work. It can’t be that hard. So the Itrip sits on the bottom of the unit not the top.
Or do Belkin etc just want us all to buy new accessories.
Surely there is a market for this type of adaptor

The reason why people are so miffed is because they want to get the new iPod, but cant because they bought one already, simple as that.
Honestly, I’m still perfectly happy with my iPod mini, and even if I’d love to have an iPod video, it doesn’t matter.
Sure they’re churning out products *too fast*, but then when has that been a bad thing? Innovation should always be smiled upon, and should be taken as it is - not with vested interest. Innovation is innovation, and I’m glad Apple is listening to their consumers and has given us what we wanted.
Let’s not be a bunch of sour grapes.

I think people who cry about upgrades are whiners. I’ve learned this is how the game is played, and I learned the hard way. I bought a Mac Mini when it first came out. I paid extra for memory, Bluetooth, Airport WiFi (or whatever it’s called), and even got Tiger a month later when it came out. ALL of this is now standard on Mac Minis. And as for the iPod, I got a 40GB plain ol’ grey screen white iPod for $399. Then came the color iPods and now comes the video 60GB for $399….Yes, I bitched at it to my friend who’s a big Mac/Apple fan. But I’m still happy about my products.
All I know is that when the G5 laptops come out, I’m going to wait at lest 1 year before even considering getting one.

iPod video? sweeeet…
short battery life? not sweet…
this defianetly sucks, but for 9 bucks more i suppose we could get the “cellboost” disposable battery.
oh and i agree with that cody guy…apple does release it’s stuff too soon, not that i’m complaining, but tons of people are gonna buy this product, and in several months, we’re all gonna regret it when apple comes out with something new (hopefully better games, lol)...
somebody respond if u think those cellboost things would do the trick

In reality, the video function is almost useless considering that the battery can only handle 2 hours max (probably less). Doesn’t do much for me for a long train ride or flight. Most movies are more than 2 hours. If someone really wants a DAP that does video then the iaudio X5L is probably a better option. Even though the screen does not have as good of resolution, the battery life is insane. 35 hours of music or 10 hours of video. Apple should have sacrificed a little size for a stronger battery with that big screen like that and video capability.

I think society has really just gone crazy with all this nonsense. Just to keep repeating everyone:
+ Got an old ipod? It’s still as good when you bought it, there’s just new stuff on the market!
+ You don’t HAVE to watch videos on the new one. Its great for more memory.
+ If apple put it on the side itd be UGLY, not very IPODish, and youd have to use two hands.
+ If you dont like it, dont buy it.
I personally love it and am buying it in november, so hopefully ill get to hear a few reviews before i get it. <3

i find this hardly innovative. why do people say this is too fast? if you ask me, its because video playback isnt anything new. remember how many of the people on iLounge wanted FM radio, voice recording, replacable battery, equalizer, wifi, etc.? and now you’re saying that this is a piece of innovation that should be appreciated because it epitomizes apple’s forward progress? every few months, apple releases new ipods with very little improvements, and it makes apple seem like theyre trying to exploit the trendiness of ipods in order to make profits from old technology. its for that reason that i am getting annoyed, not because my 4G 40gb ipod seems obsolete—it isnt, i will use it until it breaks, then i will buy a new ipod. other players have had video playback, radios, voice recorders…and it seems as tho apple will slowly implement these features to make as much money as they can. so people feel like they arent getting the respect and consideration from apple as their hard earned money would allow them to expect. why are people arguing from Apples perspective? do you work for apple? do you want them to make money off of you?

OK, I’m keen on buying the 5G right now but I need to ask - if I compress my DVDs, save them on my iPod, plug my iPod into a tv where ever - will the quality look watchable? Nothing too technical-fancy, just will it look pretty much like I’m watching tv? Thanks, Jim

Jozer you’ve got to be joking… Obviously it’s uglier than earlier iPods? WTF. My iPod is for music first AND I want one of these because of the slimmer design and would like the 60GB capacity increase from my monochrome 4th gen-, 20GB model. Throw in a couple of loved ones pictures and TV show episodes, gravy! Brilliant!

When are the prices of the Ipod photo gonna come down? I wonder by how much.
What I think is going to happen is that somebody is going to work out how to put the new software for the 5G ipod on the Ipod photo so you can do the exact same things that you can do on the Ipod video as you can on the Ipod photo, I presume they have relitively the same hardware.
What do other people think?
