Apple intros leather iPod cases

imageIn addition to the iPod Hi-Fi and Intel-based Mac minis, Apple boss Steve Jobs also briefly announced new leather cases for the fifth-generation iPod and iPod nano. The “luxurious” leather case is “made with fine, hand-crafted Italian leather and features a soft and durable interior lining for a secure fit, making it the perfect carrying case for iPod or iPod nano.” The Apple Leather Case is available in 30GB and 60GB sizes for the iPod and one size for the iPod nano. Each is available immediately and sells for $99.

This is an embarrassment to Apple.  $99 for this crap?  I wouldn’t pay $15.

Well LawnBoy and m.sherman, it looks like its 2 to 100.

The final verdict; Steve Jobs’s new case is a rip-off and should be priced at around $40 (which would still be a rip-off).

Screw you Apple!  My iPod video is buggy as hell.

“If you don’t like it, DON’T BUY IT.”

We don’t like it.  We’re not buying it.  That’s not the point.  It’s all well and good to say that about this one case now, but have you looked around?  Aside from the relatively generous pricing, Apple is bleeding people dry.  What iPod accessories does Apple make that can actually be called good deals?  There are third party accessories that are just as good or better than Apple products, and many good ones can be a hell of a lot less expensive.  But Apple still jacks up prices because they know that there are some people who will shell out $100 for an impractical pocket of cow skin because it has that cute little fruit emblazoned on it.  This is just keeping up that whole stupid cycle.  When a leather case for a nano costs 2/3 the price of a nano itself, doesn’t that strike you as just a little ridiculous?  You can blame all these initial reactions on frustration about the underwhelming media event, but it’s a bigger issue than that.

I’ve said it again and again.  Apple is NOT you friend or caring “partner”.  It is a corporation that is designed to take your money——plain and simple——.

on the case:  cheap digital camera cases with nice soft linings work reallywell for protecting ipods.  Although I, too, have occasionally fallen for paying extra for a pretty case - the Speck products iGuy, which takes the average silicone ipod skin and adds some gumbi-style appendages.  I’m going to use it as a villain in my photo-based webcomic.

on the speaker:  too big, too pricey.  people who want to integrate their ipod with a home stereo system have already done so, and people looking for big external speakers have probably already picked up one of the countless third-party speaker-and-dock products.

NEW APPLE MOTTO: Please steal music so you have more $ to buy our overpriced worthless crap!

I love ipods and am resigned to the fact that all ipod accessories cost about $15 more they should but this case is beyond absurd. This is a $30 item at most. This case isn’t even half as good as a vaja and those run $70.

Honestly, Apple. Selling a plain-jane case with no cutouts/window at the same price as a 1GB iPod Shuffle, and 44% HIGHER than a 512MB Shuffle? Wishful thinking methinks if Apple believes this will sell well. The price premium of Apple products is usually justified on the basis of enhanced user experience - this product, coupled with the $349 boombox, makes me wonder whether Apple is losing focus and simply becoming greedy.

the pricing on the new products Jobs announced raises a couple questions:

1) was Jobs aware of the price range for comparable cases when he announced that the apple-logofied slipcase price?  It could be that i’m windowshopping in the wrong places, but i’ve seen similar products by third-party accesorymakers for thirty bucks.

2) if he was, did anyone ask him why the apple-branded slipcase costs so much more?

3) if yes, is this answer on the internet someplace?  I’d like to read it.  does the hundred-dollar case come with a special internal layer that converts the bodyheat of someone holding it into electricity to charge the ipod battery?  is it made from the hide of a rare cryptozoological bovine found ony in isolated parts of italy?

I realize that this is exactly the kind of case some people have been looking for, and i respect that - if it’s what you want/need at a price you’re cofmortable with, cool.  I would reccomend shopping around, though, use Froogle if ncessary or just check the online apple store, make sure you’re getting exactly the right case for you at a good price.

And now for the price in Sweden: SEK 995, i.e. $125 (admittedly including our high sales tax but still…) I would recommend a customized Vaja case instead if anyone wants something classy but also practical.

100 dollars for a case?!?!? for 50 bucks more you can buy a Nano. And guess what! It already comes with a case with the same funtionaly and protection as the Leather case. And most importantly is FREE!!!

PS. Steve Jobs is so rich now he doesnt know what a reasonable price is, even when it would hit him in the Face.

This is too funny for words. Here in Italy the case costs $118.00. What idiot would buy this???? The leather in Italy is beautiful but not $118.00 of beautiful. What a big disappointment this announcement has been. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Wow you people love to complain. This is fashion - pure and simple. Think Hanes pocket-tee vs. Marc Jacobs v-neck. They’re both cotton. They’re both friggin’ tshirts. Why is one $4 at Target and one $100 at Bloomingdales? The name and the attention to detail.

These cases aren’t meant to be for everyone - they’re meant to be for the people that have no problem dropping $100 for a nicely designed case. It’s status. It’s fashion. I’m not saying I agree or disagree with it… it’s just the way it is.

Please, please, please stop expecting Apple to make cheap products for the masses - that’s not what they’re about, and it’s not what they’ve ever been about. Once again, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. If you like it, and it’s worth it TO YOU, then buy it.

I certainly wouldnt buy them, they are a total waste of money, and if I would spend that kind of dough on a case, I would get a Vaja.

And nevertheless, I do think they are very beautifully designed.

It is all to do with your financial outlay, and your taste in fashion.

a bit expensive but the right design. i think the iPod is too nice not to use naked - so any design that encourages you to ‘feel the pod’ is the right approach for me.
