Apple launches My iTunes Widgets
Apple has launched My iTunes Widgets, small self-updating add-ons for web pages, social-networking profiles, or blogs. Described as “an effortless way to keep your friends up-to-date with your favorite music, TV shows, movies, and more,” the widgets require users to sign into their iTunes account, click “Enable My iTunes,” choose the size, content, and color theme of their widget, and paste the resulting code where desired. The widgets can show “My iTunes Purchases,” a listing of the most recent music, music videos, TV shows, and movies purchased from the iTunes Store, “My iTunes Reviews,” which lists music, music videos, TV shows, and movies rated higher than three stars, or “My iTunes Favorites,” which shows the artists whose music the user has purchased the most from iTunes. My iTunes Widgets can be embedded on any Flash-enabled website; the My iTunes feed is also compatible with most common RSS or ATOM readers.

well, that’s pretty lame. How about also enabling a “what I’m currently listening to right now” feature instead of limiting it to blatant iTunes advertising?

This is for people with “friends” so good they won’t ever ridicule you for your taste in music…

Jarofchris: because many of us only really use iTunes to manage music that goes on our iPods? Or because the feature you want would require a *lot* more data to go passing through Apple’s servers?

I would have much preferred something like an iTunes “New Releases widget, or something less stupid. I don’t want to know what all I have wasted my money on on iTunes. I can remember that myself. :*(

@cetlic_elk: I think what jarofchris meant was blatant iTunes Music Store advertising. The widgets show mostly iTunes purchases, not your general iTunes content. If you look only at my iTunes purchases, you see a very different music collection than my total iTunes library (which is 99% ripped from CD’s- which I think is true for the average iPod/iTunes user as well).

jarofchris, just use last.fm. it takes what you listen to itunes and it can also allow to paste it on facebook, myspace or wherever you want. this is probably why apple didn’t release a widget that does this because most people use last.fm anyways.
