Apple locks TV Out in new iPods, breaks video add-ons

Did you buy an add-on display, dock, speaker system, car accessory or cable with video-out for your color 4G or 5G iPod? Were you expecting it to work with the iPod classic or new iPod nano? Think again.

image

Without disclosing the change to customers, Apple has locked the TV Out feature of the iPod classic and video-capable iPod nano, preventing users from outputting iPod content to their TV sets as has been done in years past. Going to the Videos > Settings menu brings up a TV Out option that is now unresponsive when clicked, showing only the word “off.” When locked, video content will display on the iPod’s screen, but not on your TV or portable display accessory.*

image

Presently, the only apparent way to turn this feature on is if you connect your iPod to a device with an Apple authentication chip built in. Authentication chips are only available in Apple products, and in a handful of products made by Apple-licensed third-party developers. The chips are not available to unlicensed developers, and add additional costs to the prices of iPod accessories. Upcoming Apple video cables that will work with the new iPods will sell for a staggering $49.

Testing results with old accessories have been mixed, but largely negative. iLounge has tested the new iPods with Apple’s Universal Dock and iPod Hi-Fi, both of which unlock the TV Out option—even though the Hi-Fi has no video out feature. We have also confirmed that the new iPods do not work in popular portable video displays such as the Memorex iFlip and Sonic Impact Video-55, or most speakers with video output capabilities. One notable third-party exception is Bowers and Wilkins’ recent $600 speaker system Zeppelin, which appears to contain an authentication chip and have been assisted during development by Apple, unlike its lower-priced peers.

It is unclear whether Apple will also require new accessory purchases in order to unlock video output in its upcoming iPod touch. We will have more on this story as it develops.

[Updated: Starting in subsequent versions of the iPod nano and iPod classic firmware, Apple changed the Videos > Settings > TV Out menu option in a small and relatively unimportant way: you can now select “On” or “Ask” regardless of whether any accessory is connected, but neither of these settings will work to actually output video from these iPods to an external display unless you have connected a new accessory with an authentication chip. Similarly, the iPod touch and iPhone will only output video to authentication chip-equipped accessories, bringing up a Display on TV dialog box whenever you start video playback with such an accessory attached, and refusing to bring up that option otherwise. Pre-authentication chip video accessories remain unable to perform video from the iPod nano, iPod classic, iPod touch, and iPhone.]

To all those hoping for a firmware solution, afraid it is not likely to happen.  A separate IC in the accessory is required to unlock the video out.  Apple sprung this on all of their so called partners with about zero notice so it is not just consumers who are P.O.ed at them.

They should give the option of JUST buying the video cable.  Like anyone needs an additional cable and wall charger.  Boooooo!

Well,
After reading these comments, I went to apples own site and purchase a cable they specifically recommend. The Extrememac roadshow. Guess what… my video is lock out and this is the dock connections system. I’m glad to say I purchased my 80g ipod at costco and I’m still within my return period. It’s going back and I’ll get a creative or some other more generally compatible device. I like apple in general, but I’m voting with my wallet. This action sucks and not alerting consumers to the change sucks even more.

I bought two IPod 160G a month ago and found the video locked out. I expected to use IPod to play video to my e-glass (costed $400) when travelling on airplane, now the $400 dollars is in water. I decide to sell the stupid IPods and never buy Apple products in the future. There is no point to buy products from companies that play stupid games.

This Is the stupidest thing ever. All of us at AVIC411.com web site are pissed of because we cant use are displays in our cars any more to play video with any of the new Ipods. So we all have thousands of dollars in systems in our cars that we cant use any more because apple desides to be stupid!! Thanks Apple! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!

Using iPod Classic / Nano 3G with Video 55

To enable your “Classic” or “Nano 3G” iPods the ability to watch videos on your Sonic Impact Video55, please follow the steps below:

Step1) Update the iPod to the software version 1.0.2
Step2) Switch on the TV Out option.
Step3) Place the iPod in the Video55 dock and switch the Video55 on and play a video.
Step4) At this time, you will be viewing only the blue screen.
Step5) Go to the Menu on the Video55 and change the source from iPod to Video and then back to iPod. It will now play videos. Any control of forwarding the video or going to the next video you will have to use only the next/skip button on the iPod.

P.S.

This is a bit hypocritical of Apple. On one hand they are telling music companies that they should not be using DRM… allow music to be copyable.

And then Apple installs a kind of DRM to prevent the usage of non-apple products.

“Do as we say; not as we do” seems to be Apple’s new philosophy.

Appl changed the implementation with the nano 3g and ipod classic when iphone and touch came out.  previously video can be outputted from the 3.5mm audio jack.  with iphone, they had to use that video signal for microphone function.  so all current ipods output video only through the dock connector.

I can confirm that the iPod classic does NOT work with other video displays, audio works but no video.

It sounds like the made for ipod logo doesnt apply to any of the new ipods.  Was Apple going to tell anyone this? I have a Sonic Impact video 55 that worked fine on my 30 gb ipod video, but not on my ipod classic.  If Apple doesnt make a fix for this it will be the last Apple product i buy.

I’ve read everyone’s comments so far. Like most, I’m VERY unhappy with Apple. I might have been okay with this change if they (apple) had 1. Told consumers ahead of time, and 2. Had products readily available to use at the stores.

Neither the Sonic Impact Video 55 or the Memorex Iflip work with the Classic. Sonic Impact had a note on their site earlier this week with a workaround to get both the classic and the nano to work but it’s gone now and replaced with a note that it won’t work without the 50 dollar apple cable.  This is absolutely ridiculous. I use my 30 gig IPOD alot watching tv shows. For consumers like myself who work all night I guess we’ll have to go back to using a laptop to watch our videos. 350 bucks ( 250 for the ipod, 100 for the video player) will go pretty far towards getting a new laptop. Plus the screen’s bigger.

Man this really sucks.

I HAVE A TANGO XTREME MAC DOCKING STATION..  MY IPOD CLASSIC DOES ALLOW ME TO SELECT TV OUT,, BUT WHEN DOCKED IT STILL ASKS FOR VIDEO ACCESSORY TO BE CONNECTED, AND I SEE NOTHING ON TV,, BUT HEAR THE AUDIO FROM THE DOCK.. CONSIDERING THE TANGO WAS PURCHASED AT AN APPLE STORE, I AM XTREMELY PEEVED OFF. (PARDON THE PUN)
