Apple loses UK tablet appeal; must run pro-Samsung ads

After a U.K. court loss to Samsung over tablet design infringement, Apple also lost its appeal of the verdict, and must now run advertisements saying Samsung has not copied its design. A judge ruled in July that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab did not infringe on the design of Apple’s iPad, and Apple was ordered to post notices in newspapers and magazines stating that Samsung didn’t copy its design. After the initial ruling, Apple received a stay on the court order, but due to the appeal ruling in Samsung’s favor, Apple must run the ads. In the original ruling, the judge said Samsung’s tablet likely wouldn’t be confused with the iPad, because the Galaxy is not as “cool.” [Via BBC News]

Apple’s ads in the UK should say, “Samsung’s lawyers told us to tell you that we didn’t copy Samsung’s design.”

It’s odd judges have jurisdiction to demand something like that. Even a criminal that gets convicted isn’t forced to say he’s guilty.

Did I miss this being posted as news? - “The US Court of Appeals has overturned a ban on sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus phone, in a blow to Apple in the ongoing battle between the two rivals.”

@4: It’s been explained in earlier posts - in the U.K. you can’t escape your libel. If you take someone to court to accuse them of something and lose, you do indeed have to fess up that you accused them of something unfairly.

@5: Nope, was never posted so far as I saw, but it warms my heart to see courts get something right against a bully like Apple. Whatever inspiration Samsung may have drawn from Apple’s designs in their first generation tablet, it was certainly no different than what Apple did in the creation of the Macintosh, the iPod, or the iPhone.
