As previously reported, Apple has started selling unlocked GSM iPhone 4 units through its stores in the U.S. and online. Apple is pricing the handsets at $649 for 16GB units and $749 for 32GB models; black iPhone 4s are given a shipping estimate of 1-3 business days, while white units are listed at 3-5 business days. In its description for the handset, Apple says, “If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you’ll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.”

awesome, hopefully this is the first step toward breaking the contract system that we have in the US which totally distorts and inflates the cost of cellular service.

What is an iPhone 4s?

Aaron, I had exactly the same reaction when I first saw the headline—
Apple to offer unlocked iPhone 4s.
I thought, “Hmm… the 4s, I hadn’t heard of that before. What’s in it that makes it a new model?”
Then, I realized, it’s the plural! One iPhone 4, but two iPhone 4s. Maybe it should be like attorney general—attorneys general. So, they’re now selling unlocked iPhones 4. Nah, that doesn’t sound right at all. How about “iPhone 4"s, but then people would think they’re mock up or fake iPhones.
That’s a lot of $$.
