Apple now selling iPhone 3G online
Apple has started selling the iPhone 3G online in the U.S. Previously, the handset was only available from AT&T online—both new and refurbished—and from physical Apple Store, Best Buy, AT&T, and Wal-Mart locations. Before purchase, customers will have to pass an eligibility check, and select a rate plan if necessary. Pricing for the handset remains at $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for 16GB versions; it is unclear whether Apple plans to offer online ordering in other countries as well.

That’s nice I guess. I’m waiting for when I can purchase iPhone without being forced to also purchase AT&T;Data Plan. Happy to sign up for the phone but not the rest.

It’s available in the UK Apple Store as well, but not on contract, just on O2 Pay & Go.

@Randy - The iPhone 3G is available to buy without AT&T;contract and data plan. You just have to pay the full, unsubsidized price. Just check the AT&T;website or store.
My guess is that this is a last effort to clear inventory before a release of a new iPhone next month at WWDC.

I wish Apple will decide to sell it online too here in the Philippines. I’m planning to buy one. There are a lot of iPhone clones here in my country. And I’m telling you, it’s kinda hard to differentiate the original ones from the cloned ones.

They (Apple) have got to unload the inventory of current iPhones before the new one comes out next month. Anyone who buys one now is going to be very unhappy in about 30 days…..
