Apple posts iPhone, iPod touch 1.1.2 software

Coinciding with today’s release of the iPhone in the United Kingdom and Germany, Apple today released version 1.1.2 of its software for both the iPhone and iPod touch. Most notably, the software adds international language and network support to the iPhone, and the ability to both add and edit calendar events to the iPod touch. Other changes have also been made, including the iPhone’s categorization of built-in and custom ringtones.
Prior to its availability in iTunes, the iPhone software can be downloaded here, and the iPod touch version here, both in ZIP archives. Using the ZIP file rather than decompressing it, you can install the software by selecting your iPhone or iPod touch from the Devices menu in iTunes, holding down the Option key when hitting the Restore Software button in iTunes, and selecting the IPSW.ZIP file. well that was pretty easy - restore from backup worked a treat, except i manage all my music manually, so i need to put that back on. maybe it’s time to create a new playlist for the iPod touch!!

Great, but when will the next ipod classic update release? I bought it 2 weeks ago and it’s impossible to use it because of the last upgrade…

It appears that a new feature has been added to the 112 touch firmware, because a little battery meter now appears next to the ipod in the devices list in iTunes.

To install on Windows, hold down Ctrl-Shift and click on “Check for Updates”. Then navigate to the Zip file and open it.

Frakking frakity frak! I was soooo hoping that this update would bring disc use and manual song management.
Come on Apple. Are you TRYING to tempt me to jailbreak my iPhone? I can bloody well wait till Feb for a SDK but something as simple as disc use is pretty gosh darn important. (to me, at least)

On Windows, holding the Shift key is enough. You don’t have to do Ctrl-Shift.

Since I need to Option-Click on the *Restore* button to update with the zip file, does this mean that it will perform an actual restore instead of just an update?
If so, I believe that means that I would need to start from scratch with my iPod Touch? (Select music, photo albums, calendars to sync, etc… as well as losing my Safari cookies on the iPod)
Is that the case?

Pascal, you can option-click on the “Get Updates” button instead of restore. That way, it won’t delete your songs.
