Apple has released Apple TV Software 2.4, the latest update to its HDTV-tethered media player. Notably, the new software adds expanded support for the company’s Remote application for the iPhone and iPod touch, allowing users to control the set-top box’s menus, video, and audio playback using touch-based gestures. Apple has yet to update its Apple TV software release notes page to explain what else, if anything, has changed; iLounge editors are in the process of downloading and installing the update and will update this article if any other changes are found, or when Apple updates its release notes. Apple TV Software 2.4 is available now via the Update Software selection in the General Settings menu. [via MacRumors]

Support page is updated.
The update also added video sorting options, a new method of fast forwarding and rewind (click left or right to ff/rew, click again to do so faster, and down to bring up a chapter menu) and Flickr search.

the update is very welcome, TV shows are now ordered in ascending order instead of descending and the seasons are marked clearly. Also you can view a column of only un-viewed TV shows. The new gestures part of the remote is flawless, fast, snappy, and more responsive than the regular apple remote.

Any news on fixing stability? My ATV likes to stop streaming after a few days and only a total restore will fix it.

At last a keyboard to control text input. Searches in music, movies and youtube are far quicker and easier. Best update news I’ve had for ages.

why does apple continue to limit access for this application. Who cares about gestures. Lame. Open it up for controlling movies with Frontrow and not just AppleTV or replace front row with AppleTV software.???? Wouldn’t that equal to more sales eg movies? Because everyone with a mac has frontrow.
Come one Apple quit holding us back with technology!
