Apple releases iOS 4 for iPhone, iPod touch

Apple has released iOS 4 for the second- and third-generation iPod touch, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS. The fourth major release of Apple’s mobile device operating system—previously called iPhone OS—the new software provides over 100 new features or enhancements, according to Apple. Among these are multitasking, folders, customizable backgrounds for the Home screen, a unified inbox for the Mail application, more fine-grained control over Location Services, support for Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform, and support for iBooks 1.1 on the iPhone and iPod touch. Several of the features—most notably multitasking—require more advanced hardware and are therefore only available on the iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch, as well as future devices such as the iPhone 4. Interestingly, iLounge editors have seen a dialog box experienced when updating a second-generation iPod touch, warning not to “interrupt the update, which may take an hour or longer to complete” that was not seen when upgrading an iPhone 3GS. The iOS 4 update for the second-generation iPod touch weighs in at 315.0MB, the iPhone 3G update is 292.1MB, the third-generation iPod touch download is 366.4MB, and the iPhone 3GS version is 378.0MB. iOS 4 for the iPhone and iPod touch is available for download now via the update feature in iTunes, and will be coming to the iPad this fall.

Update: iOS 4 for the iPhone 4 is a 579.3MB download, more than 200MB larger than any of the other iOS 4 install bundles.

Re comment no. 16
Yes!!!! I am having the same reduced resolution in my photo albums problem after loading iSO4!! Freaking out…. Camera roll looks fine though.
Is that what I have to do to fix it? Just re-sync? If it asks me to back up should I say yes? Just don’t want to over-write my last back-up before loading software with the problem. Also, down load took 20 mins, ok! But installing took about 2 minutes!!!!! Is that too fast?!

IOS4 is pretty good, it’s just I have and Ipod touch 3G and ever since i updated to 4.0 i’ve been have trouble connecting to my wireless that i never used to have trouble with, i even tried forgetting the connection and redoing it and it still does it. I go into settings and it says that I’m connected but the bars don’t show up on the top right, or their there and i can do anything that has to do with the internet. I think they still have to work out the kinks in the new os.

I’ve downloaded the iOS 4.0 on my 2nd Generation 16GB iPod Touch, but after I upgraded the software, my battery life decreased DRASTICALLY.

Can anyone help/clarify this?

I have a question… After it finished updating, the wallpaper of the home screen is no longer black, but allows us to use the picture of our choice. But, how do we make it so that it is black again? I personally enjoyed having it the old way.

I’ve tried several times to upgrade my 2G 32 MB iPod touch but keep getting an error message saying that I will lose the contents on my iPod if I proceed.  Will the content in my iTunes library still be OK and transfer everything back to the iPod?

Issues since upgrade: Ipod no longer has ability to reverse for 30sec.  All photo orientations stuck on portrait.

Add me to the list of 2nd Gen iPod Touch users who desperately want to know how to downgrade back to iOS3.  I am encountering frequent freezes in both Apps such as Pandora and even the built-in music.  Essentially the iPod no longer functions as an iPod.  At least maybe if anyone who hasn’t upgraded and reads all these posts they will be smart enough not to “upgrade” their iPod into a paperweight.

Does anyone know how to change the homescreen wallpaper on the 2nd generation ipod touch?

Posted by Jackson on July 9, 2010 at 9:30 PM (CDT)

it’s not fair that you can’t customize the home screen for the 2nd gen ipod touch , my friend has the 3rd gen and he can costomize the home screen, thats the only reason i dowloaded the update

I have just downloaded the new iOS4 to both my iphone 3G and 2nd Generation ipod. It seems to be fine on my iphone but my ipod is having issues! The ipod says that I don’t have a connection when it has all four bars and in setting says that it is connected? Ii also will not let me add any movies or TV shows back to it? I have reset it several times and restored it and it still is messed up!
