Apple also today announced iTunes 5, a major new version of its digital music jukebox that brings new features and a “refined look.” iTunes 5 includes a new Search Bar for searching your library and the iTunes Music Store faster; the ability to organize playlists into folders; Smart Shuffle, which lets the user change the “randomnessâ€? of shuffled songs; and the support for Windows users to automatically sync contacts and calendars from Outlook onto their iPods.

In addition, the iTunes Music Store has added parental controls and album reviews from “Apple’s team of music experts,” and now features a catalog of more than two million songs, making it “the largest online music catalog in the world,” according to Apple.

iTunes 5 for Mac and Windows is available as a free download now.  See iLounge’s iTunes 5 Feature Overview here.

I just gotta say, doublepower, that you are 100% correct. iTunes 5.0 does blow on XP.

I don’t know what can be done about finding 4.9 now, realworldworship. I usually save every new installation file when I download it. When I go to download it, it asks me where I want to save it and I can obviously change what I call it, so I usually call it “iTunesSetup4_9_0.exe” in the case of 4.9. This was they’re all there clearly labeled. I even kept 5.0, just in case I need to send someone a computer virus. LOL.

Itunes 5.0 is really slowing down my computer.  Anyone else having this problem?  how can i fix it.

If you can uninstall it and re-install 4.9, then do that.

And, honestly, like I said before they didn’t need so many new features. Just integration with the finished Windows version of Quicktime 7 would have been enough. They could have saved Parental Controls and some of the other cr@p for 5.1. But, no, they had to add a bunch of it, and look what a piece of garbage 5.0 for XP is. A big steaming pile of trash is what it is.

Hi I just installed v5 on my computer and was so happy to see that it would finally synch with outlook for your calendar and contacts.  However, when I checked which program to synch with I chose Outlook Express instead of Outlook.  It was working fine with Express but I need Outlook.  When I went back to change the setting it won’t update. I keep getting an error “an unknown error occurred (-50).  Does anyone know what this means?  I tried to uninstall and then reinstall v5 but the sam error keeps showing up.

Since iTunes 5 now seems to handle podcasts as songs, I’m having troubles keeping song counts in sync between my iTunes library and my iPod (Photo) 40 gig. iTunes totals are always greater than what’s on my ‘Pod. Another annoying little anomaly is although I have my podcast prefs set to save only the last 3 episodes, I see lots and lots of older podcasts retained in my iTunes library (and on my hard drive!). And when I try to remove manually, the track count in iTunes doesn’t change so things get more out of sync as new podcasts download. Anyone else experiencing this one? Any advice?

Thanks!

Thomas, did you download 5.0.1? Or did you download 5.0 before they posted 5.0.1?

About the iPod updater ... on Apple’s website about the download page for the updater, it says that the 09-06-2005 (or however the recent one is written) is no different than the one that was posted for the iPod around the end of June. The only true difference is the software for the iPod nano—that is supposedly the only new thing on it. What I would like to know is this: Most of you who are having problems with the latest update file for your iPods, when was the last time you updated them BEFORE September’s update? I haven’t done it for a long time, and then before that I took a long time. I’ve probably done one update since I got it. Putting the software on it when I first got it didn’t count. But since then, I’ve only updated it once. “Why should have I?” I figured. “Hey, it still worked.” And it did. What about all of you?

I’m running XP with all the updates and downloaded iTunes 5.0.1.  It freezes my computer and I need to reboot every time it is launched.  Have you ever noticed in every Apple store the long lines and wait times for Apple Technical Support?  Now I know why.  Apple doesn’t seem to test product before it is released.  I never had any PC problems until I installed iTunes 5.  Steve Jobs should be embarrassed.

The lines aren’t long if you get a ProCare card. And, yes, Apple DOES test products out before they are released (except in the case of iTunes 5.0.0). They’re not MicroSoft for God’s sake!

iTunes 5.0 sucks real bad! my iTunes doesn’t see the shared music on my other PCs. it worked just fine with 4.9. shame on apple. i bet they just rushed it so they could release it together with the nano…

Finally got er to work on my XP. The quicktime didn’t install and caused iTunes not to open. The “unexpected error” message told me poo and apples suggestion was to reload iTunes for the billionth time. They also had me delete iTunes at one point so bye bye playlists. Anyone know where ya can get software that can backup an actual image of the ipod including playlists?
