Apple RSS reader for iPhone?
A placeholder image at the URL http://reader.mac.com/ has lead to widespread speculation that the page will be home to an Apple-produced, AJAX-based RSS reader for the iPhone. When browsing to the page from a standard PC, an image comes up that states “This Application Is Viewable Only On iPhone” across the top, with the following message underneath: “This application can only be viewed using the iPhone. For more information on the revolutionary new iPhone, visit http://www.apple.com/iphone.” The original placeholder also included an image of what appeared to be an iPhone-formatted RSS reader on the device’s screen; that part of the image has been replaced with an image of the iPhone’s “slide to unlock” screen. If the RSS reader is web-based, that means we can only read articles when we have signal? I like reading RSS feeds offline as something to do when I have no signal. I hate the idea of alwaus being tethered to signal to use programs on the iPhone.

Using iPhoney (http://www.marketcircle.com/iphoney/), an iPhone web browsing simulator (w/ an “iPhone” agent setting, the page redirects to http://www.apple.com/iphone. I guess it’s not up yet.

Hit it with an iPhone and you get this message: If you’d like to view an RSS feed, just enter the feed URL directly into Safari’s address bar.
Typing in a feed URL actually redirects you back to reader.mac.com with the Feed you want as URL variable. I guess it routes your feedrequests threw itself and serves as a proxy. Images in feeds go through fine, but still working on video.
