Apple has begun emailing past customers of its retail and online stores, notifying them of a special one-day Apple shopping event this Friday, November 26. According to the notice, Apple’s retail stores will open at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, while customers visiting the online store will have all day to place an order. In the past, Apple has offered modest sales on select products during such events; last year, it offered a discount of $101 on all MacBook Pro laptop computers as well as $31 discount on 32GB iPod touch models.

Kind of sad that I waited for the event since I was getting a touch for my daughter… and wound up buying it from Amazon.com because a 3rd party still was able to cut buying direct by $10. I get why Apple likes to charge full retail the rest of the year, but on Black Friday, they really ought to think about actually competing. The whole idea is that consumers are ready to dump some cash on the best deals they can find, and it wasn’t hard to find better deals.

CM - what was the Amazon price on Friday? I didn’t really look once I saw a $25 discount on Apple.com and bought one for each of my daughters (plus, I wanted engraving since they are both in school…where devices tend to disappear).

I was getting the 8GB, $209 on Apple’s store and $199 at Amazon. I’m a Prime member so 2 day shipping was free (better than Apple’s), and both charge me sales tax, so kind of a no-brainer which to go with. I suppose the engraving could have made the $10 worth it, but I’m not really an engraving sort of guy

I am not a big fan of engraving my own things (I tend to take better care not to leave them sitting), but it could be useful if someone happens to “find” one on a desk at school.
That Prime deal may be worth looking into though.
