Apple updates 20GB iPod packaging, photos inside [updated]

iLounge reader Adrian from Germany writes to tell readers that “the packaging of the regular iPod 20GB has been changed recently. Instead of the packaging featuring images from the silhouette ads, the iPod 20GB is now packaged similarly as the updated iPod photo models (i.e. black box with silver writing). The only difference is that it lacks the ‘photo’ box and the size obviously reads ‘20GB’ instead of ‘30GB’ or ‘60GB’. The display images are also not in colour. Glad the box looks nicer again, but it’s confusing for customers.”

For pictures of the new 20GB iPod box, click on Comments above or photos below. For iLounge’s box opening gallery for the 30GB iPod photo, use this link. Thanks to Adrian for the 20GB photos!

Update: iLounge editor Jerrod H. has confirmed that black-boxed 20GB iPods still contain their predecessors’ FireWire and USB cables, as well as their AC adapters. Thanks, Jerrod.

Does this mean no firewire cables on the 20 gig as well?

Two things. One, I like the silhouettes better in a way. It just looks cooler to me. Also, I can’t find anywhere on apple that there is new boxing for the 20 gig.

Perhaps this box change also includes the redesigned headphones with the cable slide thing and smaller plug.

Does this mean there’s finally a new 4G software update coming? because it’s about time!!!

I’m getting really pissed.

I understand that the chemical bonding agents employed in the cellopane wrapping remains consistent with previous packaging. Phew!

iPod PACKAGING changes and people are interested?

Can you let me know if the receipts you get from the Apple Store change - I’d really like one of the new ones.

And maybe I can dream up loads of extra crap they can put on the new receipts as well - like the extra features people seem to wish for whenever a new product is mentioned….

Tragic.

PugRallye - thank you…the fact that this is considered “news” is completely absurd.  Who give’s a rats behind if packaging changes??  Honestly, people, get a grip.  Life as you know it is NOT going to change one iota…

redsoxnation, I personally find it interesting what Apple does from a marketing standpoint as well as a consumer standpoint.  I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate it if someone said watching the Red Sox is not worth your time, that you should “get a grip.”  The Red Sox is entertainment to you just like this story is entertainment to others.

gleep, well if you consider a story about changes to Apple’s packaging to be “entertainment”, then I suggest you get out a little more often!

It’s obvious 2005 is the “year of Black” at Apple.  I wonder if any upcoming hardware is going to be black (aside from the U2 iPod)?

<sarcasm>For some reason, my 20 gig iPod box is still in the hall closet. Does this mean I have a collectible or something?</sarcasm>

The new box is kinda ugly, but it’s probably cheaper to make…
