AT&T boosting EDGE speed ahead of iPhone?
Numerous reports from across the country are indicating that EDGE speeds over AT&T’s network have seen a dramatic increase over the last twelve hours or so. Many are convinced that this sudden boost in speed — some are seeing results well over 200Kbps — is connected to the iPhone launch. It was previously rumored that such an upgrade was coming, but marked speed improvements had not been noticeable until now.

This, if true, is awesome news. And it will shut all the 3G whiners up.

I could live with 200Kbps, but I wouldn’t be happy about it.

Flippy, get a clue. AT&T’s 3G currently runs @ 380kbps (kilobits per second), increasing to 1.5mbps (megabits per second) by year’s end.
None of which the iPhone can use.
200 kbps is nice, but it’s still a joke.

The point is that 200 kbps will be adequate until the 3G iPhone 2.0 comes out. The knock against the iPhone was that EDGE was excruciatingly bad. Maybe this will make it tolerable.

I’ve been an EDGE user for almost a year on my SE 300. Its amazinging fast this morning, very, very little delay.
Of course, that’s with the “other”, mobile internet.
And before a half-million iPhone users get on this weekend.

Ah…reality sets in as to why there was the necessity for ATT’s recent EDGE updates.
EDGE is tolerable, but just barely.

Its it great that the iPhone has wifi abilities as well so you don’t HAVE to always be limited to cell data speeds.
