AudioOutfitters has introduced the ezGear clearCase 60, a new version of its clear, hard case for larger iPods such as the iPod photo. The clearCase is made of ultra-clear acrylic, has openings on the top and bottom for access to all ports, and an opening for the Click Wheel. It covers the iPod’s screen completely to prevent scratches, and comes with a detachable clearClip and a lanyard. The clearCase 60 works with the iPod photo 30GB, 40Gb and 60GB models and the 40GB fourth-generation iPod. It sells for $19.98.

What sort of hinges does this case employ? I hope it’s not the ball-and-stud type you see on the el-cheapo plastic boxes that pushpins are packed in. Those break in about the first four minutes of use.

The hinge uses a 1/16 inch strong plastic peg on each side of the cover that actually fits inside holes on either side of the body of the case. The product has been available for six months and we have not recieved a single case back with a broken hinge.

What I’d really like to see is a clear acrylic case that a)covers the clickwheel and b)hinges at the bottom for docking port access. At the moment, I use a podsleevz cover because it’s one of the few I found that actually protects the clickwheel. Unfortunately, though, aside from being rather ugly, I have to slip it off every time I want to charge or sync up my iPod from the dock. I’m worried I’ll end up scratching the iPod having to constantly slip it on and off, etc.
