Buy.com is offering preorders for the Belkin Media Reader at $86.73. The Media Reader allows 3rd generation iPods to download and store digital photos using CompactFlash I/II, SmartMedia, SecureDigital and Memory Stick media.

Well we are going in the right direction. $87 for some plastic and a few wires still feels quite expensive though

No, Electronics that carry this price usually contain some form of electronics. Maybe even a circuit or a chip!

For $87 I think I will buy a few 256MB cards—saves me ipod battery and aggravation, not to mention the risk of a disk failure wiping out my photos before I can burn them to DVD.
