I looked at all the responses to the FAQs, and they are all the same! The answer they provide don’t answer the question (in most cases). It’s as if they just threw everything together, not caring if the answer matched the question.  The “FAQs” are a big dissapointment.

So much for students recording their classes (unless the teacher is always within 25”). At least they make it clear that the thing is really of little use for anyone who does not need to make voice memos or record interviews.

this is really a disappointment. its very restricting. i was thinking of purchasing this for use when recording concerts and as a classroom recorder but it cant do either of those function. they further make this product completely useless to me by not offering a line-in jack.

I bet the restrictions are more of an internal hardware issue than a software/firmware issue. It’s only a guess, but maybe Apple didn’t have in mind hi-fi recording when they designed the iPod.

Sure it’s dissapointing that you can’t record hi fedility sound, but at least it can record something. How many other MP3 media players in its size and funtionality can do that?

I have a feeling that the request for live, full audio, recording will become increasingly popular within the hard-drive based poratable player arena. So far the only true portable recording devices are DAT and MD recorders, and even some of these must be downloaded via analog and in real time to be edited on a computer.

If apple catches on to this idea, which i believe they will do, they may just design a whole new media player that is designed for recording/playback. I find it highly doubtfull that the iPod has a good onboard audio converter to do such recordings…i mean it’s taking in sound from the same port as the headphones. If they want a good recording device, they’ll have to design something with AT LEAST a dedicated input like a MIC-in or LINE-IN jack.

After the excitement clears, i’m still going to be pleased with my iPod. AFterall, the first reason i bought this was to LISTEN to music. I think some rumors got started and people just got too excited and hyped up the iPod’s capabilities.

We will see…

P.S. Here’s a rumor that i’d like to start…and it ain’t too far off from reality either.

I think Apple included this low quality recording for something cooler than just dictation and personal voice messages/notes. MAYBE Apple has some kind of voice recognition utilities in the works.

VOICE COMMAND: “Artist >> Radiohead >> Play”

Now THAT would be awsome.

What a waste of time this product is!  I would laugh if I caught a journolist shoving an iPod in the face of some politition!

The specs are rubbish too: Monaural (mono), 16-bit audio at 8KHz

That makes the published frequency responce wrong: “frequency response is 500Hz to 12kHz”

Thats impossible, as those specs would require a sample rate of 24KHz.

So the real frquency responce is 500Hz to 4KHz, not far from a telephone! lol

Overpriced, and really not worth it.  For $50 you can buy a small tape based dictation machine, and it would be just as good, if not better.

actually Tony, the journalist can be 25’ from the politician… haha…

Since its just a normal mic in there, couldnt you just attach another, better mic? I’m going to buy 2, and test some stuff with one of them…

Apple gave us earphones with the iPod, but most people change them… Belkin gives us a microphone with the recorder, but we can’t change it? I would have been happier with a line in…

I’m sure there’s a way to hack the belkin voice addon and add a better mic with better range, a hack or addon. Someone will come up with something.

Yesm the recording specs are laughable. For $200 you can get a butt-ugly Archos or Zen with 20Hz-15KHz analog or digital recording, or for $300 one of the new iRivers with optical digital or analog recording. For $400 you can get a Lyra with audio and *video* recording. The iPod is a (not cheap) joke.

Something in iPods favour is that Audible.com supports it. I listen to lots of audio books and was looking for a new and better mp3 player and would have gotten one of the other ones with voice recording already built in if Audible.com had support for it. Audible does not have a very wide range of player support.

I was thinking the same thing about what Ilovemusic said. I have had my suspitions that Apple will come out with voice recognition programs. that would rule, and maybe they would make cooler games using that feature who knows, anyhow good idea and Radiohead Rules!
