Canada levies iPods - 10GB $15, 15GB - 40GB $25

“Each recorder with a memory capacity of 1 GB up to 10 GB will be levied at $15, and each recorder with memory capacity of more than 10 GB will carry a $25 levy.

The music industry had requested much higher levies. Under the industry’s original proposal, an MP3 player with a 20GB minidisk hard drive would have been subject to a levy that would have boosted the price by about $125. Manufacturers filed objections to the Copyright Board over that plan, arguing that the levies would price their products out of the market.”

The most telling part I found was this tidbit:
“To date, the CPCC says it has collected $59.3-million through the existing levies, and has disbursed about $10-million of that.”

So they’ve disbursed about 16% (1 in 6) of the money collected. Gee what’s happened to the rest? Administrative costs? Overhead? Lining somebody’s pocket?

Exactly the reason such an idea is absurd.

This is a sad day for Canadians. I can’t believe a levy like this is even legal-it automatically assumes that everyone will “steal” music. What a load of crap!

Well, the Apple Canada store officially sells them at the levied prices now.  It makes me sad.  Futureshop hasn’t started selling them at levied prices, so I guess I’ll be buying it from them and skipping the levy (and the laser engraving :( )

Canadians can simply offset the extra charge of the levy by stealing some music.

This is great. At least now we Canucks can’t be sued or arrested for downloading music.

It’s great to not live in a police state.
