Clarion to debut car audio/video system for iPod

Bloomberg reports that Clarion Co will begin selling a car audio and video system in Japan next year that’s compatible with Apple’s iPod portable music player. “People have asked why the iPod can’t be used in car systems, and from that perspective there is plenty of interest,” Tatsuhiko Izumi, president of Tokyo-based Clarion, said in a television interview.

I’m hoping some other after market companies come up with iPod integration solutions. As of now, a lot of OEM systems still lack integration with iPods. So this would be one way for after-market companies to find an underserved niche.
But hopefully, Apple works with other car makers besides BMW to offer even better integration.
We shouldn’t have to put up with overpriced, unreliable, German cars just for good iPod integration.

I guess it would be interesting to be able to hook up a GPS and maps (iPhoto) and play it through your video/audio car system. You could have specific music play as you entered various areas..."Sweet Home Alabama”, “Comin into Los Angeles”, “City of New Orleans”, “New York, New York”, “Margaritaville”...etc.

Alpine already makes an adapter, the KCA-420i, for use with it’s newer cd players. It plugs right into the cd changer output on the rear of the head unit, and mounts indescreetly almost anywhere. I have it and it works great...displays song info right on the head unit and lets you navigate playlists, artists, and albums right from the deck, as well as play, pause, etc. I highly recommend it!

Let’s hope Clarion comes closer to doing it right than Monster. The more information they release about iCruze, the more hamfisted it looks. No display compatibility, 6 playlists (or 10, depending on the configuration of your multi-CD controller), an “optional” display that’s not ready yet...what a sham.

I’m wondering why more car mfg’s aren’t making the mp3/aux input a standard option. Honda did it with the Element and it’s phenomenal. No adapters required, just plug the ipod into the aux jack in the dash, and you’re golden. Is the Element the only car with that as a standard option?? The 2005’s also come with XM radio as a standard option. C’mon people, catch up!!!
