CNET: Canadian MP3 player tax challenged

“MP3 player manufacturers, including Apple Computer, Dell and Hewlett-Packard, are challenging a recent regulatory ruling in Canada that would impose an extra fee of as much as $25 on iPod-like digital music players.
The Copyright Board of Canada ruled in December that hard drive-based digital music players should be subject to fees aimed at compensating musicians, songwriters and record labels for copyright infringement. Similar fees are placed on blank audio tapes and CDs, and manufacturers typically pass on the costs to the consumer.
A group of retailers, including Wal-Mart Stores and Best Buy, also is appealing the decision, which will be heard by a federal court.”

You can’t have legal downloads AND cheap players for the downloads…
I doubt much of the tax will end up in the hands of the artists….

The tax is total BS. It assumes you are stealing music and should pay more.

Hah! Canadia!
So if they charge on Hard Drive based mp3 players, when will it be that they will charge tax on hard drives themselves because they can play music?
What about IC chip recorders? Laptops, desktops. Hey, PalmOS and WinCE plays mp3’s! I guess they should tax that too?
Canada makes me laugh.

There’s nothing sane about silly taxes. There is no rational basis for the Canadians taxing MP3 players. Next thing you know, the Canadian iPods will have to have at least 1/3 Canadian music like their radio stations do!

As a Canadian living in the U.S., I would point remind everyone that Canadians are really quite dastardly. We have shipped our two most evil inventions to the U.S. and no one has even noted the beginning of the end for the U.S.
The first are Canadian Geese. Evil things.
And then… the kicker… Celine Dion!
Now that’s evil.
