O’Reilly has posted an interview with Bernard Leach, the first developer to successfully port Linux onto the iPod. In the interview Leach mentions his latest project - trying to get a CompactFlash reader to download digital photos to his iPod.

“Just recently, thanks to the guys at SiK.com, I got the hardware together to test connecting a CompactFlash reader to the iPod. So far, I’ve only had limited success, but it’s getting there. Once I get that working, I plan to write a small application that will let me copy digital images from CompactFlash cards to the iPod.”

I agree with you that that would be great.  We’ve got the EOS 10D and it doesn’t have a firewire outlet, just USB.  We weren’t willing to spring the extra $6500 for the 1DS smile

When I brought the possibility up to my wife of buying an iPod or Archos or something similar to offload images to, she quickly pointed out that we wouldn’t be able to actually view the images, since we capture in RAW format.  But with the 10D you can save both RAW and a small JPEG simultaneously, for no discernable cost in terms of speed and very little in terms of memory.  That would allow us to view the JPEG on the Archos.  Then we could thumb through them at leisure and delete any we don’t want.

Just a thought…

I have a friend with an Archos and he’s going to bring it to my house tonight so I can try to dump images directly from my camera.  That the Archos has built-in CF support will probably be the decising factor for us.  Worst case, we can take the CF card from our 10D and stick it in the Archos to copy images.

Anyway, I’ll post after I’ve tried it.

Why is it not possible to simply connect the ipod and a digital camera via a firewire cable and transfer photos directly? The ipod could have a slim, read-only version of iphoto on it. Seem like a more elegant solution than schlepping Belkin’s Big Box around with you.

That is exacltly what I meant. Here’s a nice job
for the iPod-programmers. And then let it please be
compatible with the classic iPods as well.
