Cringely on new iPod division
In his latest column for PBS, Robert Cringely has written an editorial on why Apple recently created a separate division for the iPod. “Apple is essentially getting out of the business of making its own products… Why would they take someone used to producing products like the G5 workstation and turn his attention to little music players? It’s hardly a comparable challenge… I think it comes down to a combination of structural changes in the industry and Apple trying harder to cut costs, which really means raising profit margins.”

Interesting article.
I wonder how much truth there is to the claim that Apples goal was only ONE million songs for iTMS in the first year?

This guy, just like all the other writers need very bad to stop sniffing glue.
Apple’s lack of roll outs for other products has only two reasons. IBM and Motorola haven’t been getting updated CPUs to Apple. How are they supposed to announce new products they can’t deliver. IBM already possibly made Steve look like a fool saying that 3Ghz G5s would be released by summer 2004.
Stupid reports. Stupid, stupid, stupid reporters.

It IS true that Apple’s initial goal—even knowing that a Windows version was in the works—was ONE MILLION songs per year. They said so early on. (The hundred million prediction came along later.) Apple beat their music store goal by 70 x.
And no, that doesn’t mean Apple will stop making computers running the best OS around.
