DataMan update adds per-app data usage tracking

XVision has released an update to DataMan, its real-time data usage tracking app for iOS devices. DataMan allows iPhone users to keep track of their Wi-Fi and cellular data usage. Users can view usage by date and time and location and even plot usage on a chart or a map and set alerts to be notified when data usage exceeds certain daily, weekly or monthly thresholds. Version 5.2 adds a new “App Watch” feature that allows users to track usage on a per-application basis so they can see which of their apps are using the most data. The new App Watch feature supports not only third-party apps but also built-in apps and services such as Siri and iCloud. DataMan Pro requires iOS 5.1 or later and is available from the App Store for $1.

Interesting how no tech journalists are questioning how this app works and if it will stick around considering it likely violates Apple’s wishes for how its backgrounding APIs work. Apps can’t run in the background, even to monitor iOS’s own data counters, for more than 10 minutes unless they’re VOIP, TCP/IP connection or Location Services related. So, this app must have either found a way to trick these APIs or is using some feature (such as the GPS tagging feature) to allow it to be registered with Location Services even though it really doesn’t use such services for its core functionality.

Interesting how David above doesn’t know that the only reason I need an app like this is because a ton of other apps that keep running in the background indefinitely and sucking up my data.

Does anyone still have the versione of this app that featueres the per-app data usage tracking?
Since it’s been pulled from the AppStore — Shame on You, Apple! — I can’t download it anymore.

I downloaded this app believe it had the per-app feature but it appears that the app is now known as DataMan Pro which is $10.49 (AUD).

Could you ensure me that this app shows the data usage per each application?? because in the description of the app in apple store I cannot see this feature specified.. and this feature is exactly that I need, the rest of features are the normal ones offered by thousand of free apps.

Thanks for your help.
