So from what I read on the site, it seems that it’ll let it do more than copy photos from a digital camera…
Though it’s not the most elegant solution, has the dream of sharing MP3’s/AAC’s from iPod to iPod finally come true?

According to the spec, it transfers at USB 1.1 Full speed, that’s 12Mb/s.

Even if it could transfer fiels onto the iPod at firewire speed, the files won’t be playable, because it sees the iPod as a hard drive, and has no access to the iPod’s DB. If I want things from my friends, I can just lend them my iPod overnight or whatever, I’m not carrying something (presumably) bigger and heavier than my iPod to do it.

Not to mention, of course, that you’d need your iPod USB cable too. Might as well carry your entire computer around.

There might be the possibility of directly transferring files from iPod to iPod with minimal extra hardware involved. Since Firewire is a client-client interface, there needs to be no “host” or “root” hub, so in terms of hardware, there is no reason why two iPods can’t connect using firewire. The only two pieces of hardware that are necessary are the standard stock link cable, and that “pocketdock” accessory.

Now, as for the software part of it, there needs to be a replacement firmware, as Apple would probably never implement something like this. Right now, iPod Linux is the the most likely candidate. By using the SBP2 protocol already present in the Linux kernel, its entirely possible to make one client, one host, and transfer files. As for the iPod DB, if the firmware is replaced, then most likely it will not be based upon a central DB, and if it is, then it would probably have an on-board option to scan for files and rebuild its DB.

The iPod, hardware-wise, is a very capable device. Its just that the stock firmware by Apple is holding it back.

I can’t see any way to select files on the source device, or, for that matter, a target location on the target device. Basically, this means you can only copy the entire iPod/CF card/SD card (whatever) to the target, not select files on demand. The target would need to be equal/bigger than the the source.

This completely limits functionality to being more of a mass copy/backup device and not much more.

“delkin” has been around for years, making “media wallet” type products for professional photographers. Just because their products are higher-end than most iPod/Apple-bindered people are aware of doesn’t mean they aren’t legit. They’ve been making pc-less USB/firewire portable media drives as long as anybody, so the “huhu, they sound like belkin” comments are ignorant.

I thought iPods connected using firewire?

Just wondering if it will work with G-2 Ipods.  I was a little disappointed that the Belkin system doesn’t work--us older generation has been abandoned by apple.  It sounds like it treates the iPod as a remote drive, which should not be a problem with the older firmware.  Or, am I missing something.

Someone else actually asked Macally and they explicitly said their Syncbox wouldn;t work with the iPod.

Or maybe Macally just haven’t tested it with the iPod?
