Duke Freshmen receive long-awaited iPods

“‘Cool’ was the word of the night as eager members of the Class of 2008 gathered en masse on the East Campus Quadrangle Thursday to receive their long-awaited and highly-publicized welcome gifts: 20-gigabyte Apple iPods.

‘This is so cool,’ freshman after freshman exclaimed as they were handed boxes containing the tiny digital devices that are at the heart of the much-hyped Duke iPod First-Year Experience.’

I agree, I’m on student aid, and had to save and scrap to gether for my Ipod…  Although I must say, at least my school didn’t lie and tell us the cp[y of XP Pro was ‘free’  Yes the Duke kids are lucky, but those who had to work to earn the money to buy theirs will appreciate much more. (when mom and dad are paying for college some of them just don’t care?)

i am one of those obnoxious people who got a free ipod…and no, we can’t sell them….we have to be able to “present” them at the end of the year or else we pay for them.  however nicely engraved they are, countless students are going to get them totally scratched up since there are no cases for sale at the university yet…

the most interesting facet of this is that “shared music” in itunes means we can access music from all over campus…albeit we can’t download it…

I think these new freshmen are not getting the lastest ipod. They are getting the 3 Gen Ipods. Based on Belkin news above, Belkin would be giving ipod voice recorders for these new freshmen which are only compatible for dock connector ipods, not with the ipod mini. As everybody knows iPod minis is much compatible with 4 Gen, Click-wheel ipod. Unless, Belkin has already a new voice recorder which will work with 4 Gen, click-wheel ipod and hopefully will work as well with the ipod mini.

frosh: sorry, but you’re wrong:  These are brand-new, fourth-generation iPods, preloaded with custom content, and etched with the Duke logo (see a picture here.)

The Belkin voice recorders work with any iPod with a Dock connector - that includes 3rd-gen models, as well as the newest 4th-gen models (not sure about the Mini…)

Some colleges give their students “free” laptop computers…. the money to buy the ipods had to have been worked into the tuition
