Embedded apps for iPod and future devices
MacRumors has posted information regarding two job offerings for engineers at Apple’s Job site. The first is a position for Jr. Software Engineer - Embedded Apps. “Join the iPod and Special Projects Group to create and enhance the embedded applications you find on the world famous iPod and the upcoming devices from Apple. You will join a small successful team; work in a fast paced environment to write the embedded applications software that allows the user the rich experience they have when using the iPod and future devices.”
The second position is for a “Senior Embedded Software Engineer” with duties to include “the design and implementation of consumer multimedia applications with skills required on the ARM platform.” The iPods use the ARM7TDMI 32-bit RISC core processor.

Isn’t it a bit sad that Apple still has to hire people to do those things, indicating that they haven’t been done yet or that Apple doesn’t have anyone now already skilled enough to do those things?

Um no. It could be they are working on a project and realize to get it done by a certain time, they need more people on it. Or it’s something they’re looking into and want to experiment with.
Notice the words “join” and “enhance” not “start a completely new project” or “we don’t have smart enough people to do what we want to do.” Don’t overanalyze the job description.

Well, you don’t know that for sure, as far as anyone knows, these applications might be in the next firmware release for the iPod. Heck, they might even add support for the writing of software for the iPod by anyone (wishfulthinking), as the supporl is already there:
it has huge space to store programs (hard disk)
it has two powerful processors (each one at 100 mhz)
it has an a adequate amount of memory for a handheld device (32 mb)
it has excellent means of input/output (screen is very high res, and input can be done easily using the touch wheel and buttons)
