Etymotic, V-Moda, Monster promise shuffle 3G-friendly earphones

Following statements from Klipsch and Scosche announcing that iPod shuffle 3G-compatible earphones were in development, Etymotic, V-Moda, and Monster have all come forward to make similar statements. Etymotic said “an upcoming version of its headsets will support the new integrated control functions of Apple’s third-generation iPod shuffle,” without listing possible pricing or release dates, while Monster said it would be adding shuffle-friendly control boxes to its Beats by Dr. Dre family of headphones, Turbine In-Ear Speakers, and new upcoming models within the “next few months.” Finally, V-Moda announced it would be developing a new V-MODA Audio Volume Control (AVC) headphone line, featuring proper shuffle 3G-compatible inline controls. V-Moda’s first AVC headphone is expected in the second quarter of 2009, with more AVC models to follow later in the year.

It’s no surprise to see companies coming out quickly with their own 3G Shuffle headphones and buds. But surely it’s possible to make a compatible headphone extension cord, which would allow people to then plug in the phones they already own.

When that happens, I might consider buying the new Shuffle—but only after Apple starts offering a 1gig version for about $30 or preferably less. The 4gig model without a screen just isn’t practical to me, even with that voiceover feature.

I guess this is excellent news to potential iPod Shuttle buyers. I hope that these new headphones will also control the iPhone 3G.

Etymotic phones aren’t for everybody, but they are great for me. They stay in fine during my weekend jogs and have SUPERB fidelity—that doesn’t show off for the PodRunner mix that powers my jogging, but wonderful for really getting into the jazz or opera that I enjoy on planes, public transit & the like.

Might just get the micro pod for jogging if the Etys are at the nice price point
