Exclusive Pictures: Apple’s iPod Photo

piciLounge is proud to present the world’s first independent pictures of the new 60GB iPod Photo, the premium color-screened iPod announced yesterday and released today by Apple Computer, with its packaging. Use the Photos link below to see our photo gallery.

The gallery includes pictures of the iPod Photo’s remarkable new screen, which is far crisper and brighter than we had imagined it would be, and a variety of the new color applications included with the hardware. Our first screenshot of the iPod Photo’s new Photo menu shows the menu choices available to the user, and you can also see the unit’s new cables, Photo Dock, and all of its packaging. Notably, the iPod Photo is the first to include Apple logo stickers, which used to be packed-in only with Macintosh computers.

Ahhh yes finally a good question!
BTW is the Dock built any different then those for the 3 / 4G? I mean the Photo’Pod has a S-VHS Videoport on it. So it maybe the connector is different too?

Are we looking for a PDA instead of a mp3 player?

I can wait a while.  The best feature is that you can now see the album art associated with tracks on the iPod.  VERY useful when you don’t remember which name of an artist goes with which track.
The reason I can wait is that I’m sure in a year or so, OLED screens will become available, and since they use MUCH less power and are perfect for devices such as the iPod I don’t see a need to run out and buy this one.

i have a 20gb 3g ipod, i bought it a year ago and it still does what i bought it for, to put all my music onto and listen to it.

wont be upgrading for a little while yet, new features are cool but i can wait

It seems Apple once again missed boat with iPod Photo, not sufficient horspower to display high resolution images. Also no inbuilt car reader.

I can’t believe no one else mentioned it yet.  Apple Store SoHo has the 40g and 60g photo on display.  They are purpously seperated from the non-photo ipods to quasi-hide the fact that this thing is significantly thicker (40g and 60g) than the non-photo ipods.  I would guess that there is a 35% increase in thickness over the normal 4g ipods.  These feel more like the 1g ipods.  T H I C K.  It’s still slimer than most other players and is sweet but you should konw.

Strange, according to apple.com.au the 40gig 4G and the photo are the same thickness (1.85cm).

On the apple US site:

Photo: .75”
40gig: .69”
20gig: .57”

Personally I like my 3G 15 gig (although I would probably have got a mini if it was available at the time).  .75” is way too thick for me, that is approaching the thickness of those lesser HDD players (i.e. creative)

Wow! Darnit! I knew I should have waited a couple more weeks… I just got a 40GB 4G 2 weeks ago, but I can always give it out as a christmas present and put the 60GB on my wishlist, I need to check the couch!

I’m wondering if there is some kind of special program or hack that will make it play quicktime movies in the future… Maybe the next incarnation of the iPod will be able to play music videos, and the iTunes store will be able to sell music video’s as well…I trust that apple’s R&D division is hard at work at making the ultimate iPod!

I dont get why people are complaining about the price?sure, the price of the 4G is relatively cheap…but remember, it doesnt come with a dock etc. Ipod Photo comes with every you need.
Last year, i paid a hefty £400 for my 3G 40GB ipod here in the UK, whcih was the standard price. I was fine with that. If i’d have ordered from USA i could have got it a lil cheaper…but i was fine with it. And so were alot of people that payed this price before apple started getting realtively aggresive on pricing.
In the apple store fgor the UK, the photo iPod is £349. That s a blooming bargain compared to what i payed. and probably compared to alot of pre-4G users too.
Also, if i were to order the iPod photo from USA, i could get it for £329 (based on current exchange rates). Whats the problem with that price?!

It’s quite obvious that apple will be releasing a new iPod next year. how much u wanan bet it will have a colour screen?a 60GB or bigger HD? better battery life?yet it’ll be marketed as jsut a normal iPod. NOt an iPod photo. Apple needs to realise ppl arent as dumb as they think. Alot of ppl will buy the foot, but alot will hold off cos theycan see what Apple are doing. SO far, the 4G, 4G iPod photo, or the U2 ipod have NOT tempted me. As far as i’m concerned at the mo….the 3G looks so much better than the 4G, and its annoying apple backtracked in the design.
Hopefully the 5G wil make me eat my words.
p.s: keep up the good work on this awesome site!

DOH!!!! I purchased mine 5 minutes after the store was back up after calling our local Apple Store and finding out that they didn’t have them in stock. :-(  Now I get to wait til the 3rd instead of well….maybe an hour. :-P

Note to self:  don’t be so quick to order online.

Here’s one reason why we may not see a video iPod - http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=10014&Page=1&pagePos=3

Can anyone confirm whether the only transition is the right to left wipe? I realize you can turn the transition off, but it would be much nicer to see a disolve. Maybe this is too CPU intensive, but clearly even to do the wipe both pictures have to be loaded into RAM so that’s not an issue.

So what about the connectivity with the InMotion 3 speakers? Apple site says “compatible with all iPods. not compatible with iPod Photo”.

I just bought the im3 speakers… now do I have to carry an extra dock to listen to the iPod Photo with the im3?

Longer battery life… worth it just for that?

Posted by thei3ug on October 29, 2004 at 7:42 PM (CDT)

why would you waste 500 dollars when you can buy a pvp (portable video player) by archos that is 400 dollars and is skinnier.  Also it has a bilt in compact flash slot, can recored video’s off the tv, will probly have a digital camera attachment, less scratiable.  NOt only that you know that apple will create a new version in a year that is 5 times cheaper and has better exesories
