Fifth-generation (video) iPods arrive
Apple’s new fifth-generation iPods have begun arriving to those in the U.S. who placed their order shortly after last week’s announcement. iLounge editors and several forum members have already received their new iPods, with many more iLoungers reporting that theirs have been shipped. In addition, it has been confirmed that most Apple retail stores have received a limited number of the new iPods.
We’ve posted a six-page photo gallery featuring the unpacking of a 30GB black iPod and a 60GB white iPod. You can also check out our Top Ten Things You Wanted to Know About the 5G iPod article, our original first look article on the device, as well as our gallery of 300+ pictures from the special Apple event where the new iPod was unveiled. how’s the case? is it an utter piece of crap, or does it seem durable enough for long-term use?

Just a note: Do not encode to H.264, I repeat do NOT encode to H.264.
H.264 is a very good codec, and its quality and filesizes are much better then just about any other format at the SAME RESOLUTION.
It’s also more cpu intensive to playback, hence the ipods only support H.264 at 320x240. It will NOT look better then MPEG4 at 480 x 480.
MPEG4 at 480 x 480 is just a bit larger filesizes, that is all. With 30GB and 60GB, you don’t have to worry about that much.
Apple included H.264 support simply to push its format and to save on bandwith.
So encoding movies for the ipod can be done in almost real time, encode at MPEG4 480 x 480. (by the way, most tivo boxes consider MPEG2 at 480 x 480 to be “best”... so there you go)
Only shortfalls of 5G ipod’s is screen size (I can live with it) and battery life.

I called the Sacramento, CA Apple store and they said they have the 30GB in white only. I’ll probably check back again tomorrow to see if they have the 60GB version.

man. i was refreshing the page with the apple store when the new ones were to be released and was definitely one of the first few to order. but i didn’t think about how getting my name engraved on it would take an extra week to ship to me. such a bummer.

One of the main issues I see with the new iPod is the removal of the remote control port on top…
I loved being able to use accessories AND being able to charge at the same time… saves battery and allows to run off of battery when near a plug.
Now the new model forces accessories to either be swapped out or accessories be designed with power support while in use.
No. No. No…
