Griffin has launched Twenty ($100), a digital audio amplifier that uses AirPlay to connect the AirPort Express — or any digital audio source — to speakers. First seen at this year’s CES, Twenty basically turns any set of speakers into an amplified AirPlay wireless system.

Featuring 2.1 channel sound, Twenty provides connections for left and right channel speakers along with an RCA connector for a powered subwoofer. Although specifically designed to dock the original Airport Express, Twenty works with any compatible digital audio source. It is currently available.

There, fixed it.

So it’s pretty much an integrated amp with a built-in DAC and a slot to hold a digital audio source that happens to no longer be made.

Strikes me as a device that’s showed up too late to the party.

I have been waiting for this product to be released. I have been looking for exactly this solution, and there is nothing anywhere near as slick. There are a few amplifiers available for the same price or less, but none have a Toslink optical port, they all have power bricks, and their output power is less. With refurb Airport Express units still on sale at Apple’s web store, this will be $169.  Assuming the audio quality is good, these will make some people very happy.
