Griffin Technology today announced that it is now shipping its Dock400 and Dock800 cables for synchronizing and charging an iPod using your computer’s FireWire ports. The Dock400 FireWire cable is being billed as the perfect solution for the latest iPod photo and iPod mini models, which ship with only a USB 2.0 cable. Griffin’s Dock800 is a Dock Connector-to-FireWire 800 cable for iPods. Both the Dock400 ($14.99) and Dock800 ($19.99) cables are 48-inches long, use Apple-approved connectors and can be used with Apple’s iPod Dock, or plugged directly into an iPod.

It’s nice to be able to take advantage of an available FW 800 port! You won’t get 800 speed, but you also won’t have to remove a FW 400 device if you happen to have your FW 400 ports occupied.

I’d like to see a 12 inch FW cable—Most of the time I don’t need 4 feet of cable.

Will Apple ever upgrade the iPod to fully support FireWire 800 speeds? That would be sweet!

Yeah I’m on a PC and I want IEEE1394b too! To Bloody Blue Blazes with USB! I know it’s not likely to happen though. :(

Why isn’t there the correct cable for hooking to a stereo: dock connector to power + line out. This is clearly the right choice for connecting to a stereo & it doesn’t exist. The closest thing is the dock or the fw+lo pocketdock. Which is weird because using firewire for power is a bit of a waste if you’re just hooking it up to a stereo, & this exact cable exists for cars.

The iPod’s HD is the limiting factor. It’s slower than FW 800.
