It doesn’t look like that much work to me. It’s a good deal considering a good universal remote like the harmony go for $150.

You could also make playlists to do multiple functions - turn on tv, surround, dvd which is eqivilent to macro functions on universal remote.

I’m just mad I don’t have a pocket PC…

i don’t think you need a pocket pc
since it’s only use to capture the IR signal from the actual remote.

you can just use a laptop with IR port or connect it to a computer with a usb/ir module.

Man. Someone should make a site with a list of remotes with zip file archives that contain the ‘sounds’ for each button on that remote. Let people submit their own sets, too.

chances are that $9.99 universal remote will not be able to control all of your devices, not to mention it won’t have macro’s

if your going to compare this to a regular universal remote, compare it to a harmony.

heh the point is you can put that to use with our ipod.  saying “our”  toward the people that have ipod,  and wouldn’t mind having this capability with the ipod.

I suggest everyone buy a good ONE FOR ALL JP1 capable remote for 25-40 bucks. With JP1 anything and everything will work on the one remote (if it doesnt you can make it). It’s alot easier then making your remotes make noise.

again.  to stress the point.  of course we can buy an actual universal remote. we know it exist.

but the point is we can add that ability to the ipod.  it’s like a fun trick you can do to it.

If we could find somewhere to put the audio files (in a .zip) all one would need is those files and that little 3.5mm headphone-jack infrared thingamajiggy and we could do it - there would be no need for the pocket-PC.. anyone feel like getting those sound files up? maybe we can get a community archive together.. (i, too, am one of the non pocket-PC sufferers)...

Also, does anyone know how to record infrared signal though a USB-IR adapter? ive got one of those for my nokia and ive got the pro sound equipment because im a sound engineer

The Griffin adaptor converts IR into sound and vice versa. So all you really need is a computer with a line in (try and find one that doesn’t have one). Use whatever recording software you prefer or have available (for Windows there’s the Sound Recorder if you don’t have anything else). Just connect the adaptor to your line in, start the recording, push a remote button (remote pointed toward the adaptor), stop recording.

Using iTunes convert the wav/aiff file to mp3/aac and upload to your iPod. (Substitute your favourite coding/transfer software if you wish.)

You should probably remove any silence in the wav/aiff file (from before and after you were pressing the button) before converting it, as this will eliminate any pauses.

I think another problem if you do something like put all your remote sounds as an album, is it will keep going through the list once it’s finished playing the command you picked. So you’d really need to do something like make a playlist for each command, or have a “remote” artist, with an album for each command. The former will make your playlists menu really messy. The latter, in order to issue a second command, would require 3 clicks and a scroll (menu to get back to albums, scroll to pick the next command, select to select the album, select to select all tracks)

While it’ll probably impress your friends at a party, the iPod’s just the wrong tool for this. It just lacks the kind of random input you can get from a touch screen or even a 5 way navigator. Pocket PC or Palm (if someone writes the software for it) is obviously a better choice.

If the iPod really had a plugin architecture so you could reprogram the various buttons to perform different functions, I think you could make a pretty usable remote.

In the immortal words of Steve (who I believe stoled them from Clinton), “it’s the music, stupid.”

Of course it’s only a matter of time before someone has the bright idea to make an iPod like device with a big touchscreen and a Palm or Microsoft OS, so you could do whatever you want with it. Of course, the first one will probably be the size of a brick or have a battery that lasts an hour. But we’ll get there.
