HP to sell iPod mini
As expected, Hewlett-Packard announced today that it has added the iPod mini to its line of HP-branded iPods. As with the company’s 4G and photo iPods it sells, the “Apple iPod mini from HP” appears to be identical to Apple’s except for packaging and warranty details. The HP iPod mini will come in both 4GB and 6GB versions and will go on sale June 5. It’s not clear whether it will be available in all four colors.
HP also introduced HP Printable Tattoos for the iPod mini, which allow consumers to personalize the device with artwork, designs and photography. “During the next six months, HP will roll out more than 300 new images, including album art from the hottest bands and recording artists, as well as unique artwork,” the company said. “The new Tattoo gallery features sports, nature, lifestyle and art sections in addition to many other categories.”

From what I see, they only have the 6gb. Anyone else getting this?

The Mini certainly lends itself to printable templates more easily than the full iPod.

With Hurd (who is this guy anyway…and further who really cares) swinging his cost-cutting battle-ax, I wonder how much longer HP will be selling the iPod? I wager to say not long. Has HP seen its day since Bill and Dave are gone? In a very real way—yes.
Maybe they’ll keep the HP Tattoos for the iPod, but little else.

FahrenheiPod 451: so, how much does it really cost to make the retail box that their version of the iPod comes in? I betcha even that is outsourced to some outside company, too.
This is exactly the sort of relationship a cost cutter would LOVE; someone else makes the unit, HP only has to market it. If HP can’t even make badge engineering work for them, then it’s time to turn out the lights and lock the door.
