Hutchison Telecom to carry iPhone in Hong Kong, Macau

Hutchison Telecommunications has announced that it has signed an agreement with Apple to offer the iPhone in Hong Kong and Macau later this year. Further details were not given. Hutchison operates 3G networks in both Hong Kong and Macau under the 3 brand, and had 2.5 million total customers and about 1.15 million 3G customers in Hong Kong as of the end of March.

What’s interesting here is that Hutchinson Telecom owns the 3 network in Australia, but has made no announcement or indication that it would be taking the 3G iPhone. Maybe there are different agreements in different countries, to the extent a provider will reject it in one and keep it in another…

It had been rumored for months that Smartone-Vodafone would be carrying the iPhones in Hong Kong, and Vodafone has iPhone contracts in a dozen countries in Europe.  I am dismayed to learn that Hutchison won the contract.  Their customer service is quite bad.

I will be in Hong Kong from May 28 to June 6.  Is there a possibility I can use my iPhone (AT&T; U.S.) on your system while there?
What other possibilities are there for cell service while visiting Hong Kong?
