Gadgets and Gear is now offering the iFlash, an external lighting source for the iPhone and iPod. Designed for use as a camera accessory for the iPhone, iPod nano 5G, and iPod touch 4G, the Dock connecting iFlash can also be used as a flashlight on models lacking a camera. Features include a simple on/off switch, a viewing angle of 60 degrees, an LED light source, and an included cap and 3.5mm jack attachment to protect the 30-pin connector and allow it to hang off the phone when when not in use, respectively. The iFlash for iPhone and iPod is available now in black or white and sells for $40. [via PhotographyBlog]

That’s pretty cool, and considering I got ‘jipped” on a
$35.00 piece of plastic from Incase, sounds reasonable.

I do not understand iPod accessory pricing, which is probably why I have so few. $10 more than this will get you a Fenix LD10, one of the finest overall flashlights (at least AA battery based) money can buy. It is a perfectly machined tool that will survive submersion, drops, and throw a spot on the tree line 150 yards away on high power or give 70+ hrs of good light on a single AA at the “low” setting. It is smaller, more pocket ready, and more ergonomic in your hand than this by a light year. Yet, in spite of the actual quality and utility, most people will still look at me like I’m nuts when I tell them what I spent on my trusty flashlight… and then here’s someone charging nearly as much for something that works no better than a $2 keychain light.
I think iPods would get a lot less haters if Apple spent more time fighting idiotic products like this one - of course, they probably can’t afford to do that or we won’t have any more Apple branded iPhone bumpers or iPod socks lest they get accused of hypocrisy
