As promised, Apple began accepting online orders for the iPad 2 earlier this morning. At this point, all but one model—the 16GB Verizon 3G—is showing a shipment time of 2-3 weeks, meaning anyone who wants the device sooner will need to get in line at one of Apple’s stores or at one of its retail partner stores in order to secure a unit. Also available online are Apple’s iPad 2 accessories, including the $39 Apple Digital AV Adapter, which allows for HDMI output and ships in 1-2 business days, the $29 Apple iPad 2 Dock, which ships in 1-3 weeks, and both $39 Polyurethane and $69 Leather versions of the iPad Smart Cover, all of which ship in 1-2 business days, save for the (Product) RED leather cover, which is listed with a shipment estimate of 2-3 weeks.

I placed my order at 1:05 PST and the order shows a wait time of 3-5 days before my iPad2 ships. Huge #s of people must have ordered in the wee hours of the morning to have 2-3 wk wait times now.

I also ordered early (5:03 EST) and was informed of the 3-5 day shipping estimate. I am sure glad I have to get up at 5:00 to go to work! The online store must have gotten bombarded…
With that said, I was a little miffed at even that 3-5 day estimate. I was really hoping it was going to say “same day”. C’mon Apple! Get that bad boy out to me. I have been waiting over a year already. I may try a store line this afternoon to get my wife her iPad. That should be F-U-N if this online pace holds true in stores.

I ordered just after 4 AM EST and also got a 3-5 day estimates. I wonder if supply is constrained as last month’s rumors suggested. i.e. no on-line pre-orders because initial stock was all being funneled into retail stores and a 3-5 day delay before they can begin to fulfill online orders (which quickly jumped to 2-3 weeks).
I can’t help but think that part of this is Apple’s fault for going with 18 different SKU’s. Would be easier if they just had 6 like last year.

I had the same expectation Mitch. When they said “Fast, Free Shipping” I was hoping it would go out today and I would have it Tue-Wed next week.
I think they sent the bulk of their stock tot he brick and mortar stores so the news media would have nice long lines for the 6 o’clock news.

I ordered at 3:05 am Central and got the 3-5 day shipping estimate with a delivery date in 7-14 days. I too, am disappointed that they aren’t shipping today, but I don’t have time to stand in line all day today. I guess it was good to have insomnia last night because I was awake at 3:00 am to order early.

In the blur of time that is modern life, 2-3 weeks goes by fast. I sold my iPad last week ($593) and it might be a month or more before I get my hands on a new one. Sure, I’d rather have one faster, but the quality of my life won’t suffer.

After some animated debate and compromise, my wife finally agreed to wait in line at the Danbury, CT Apple Store starting at 3pm to pick up the new iPad2 for me. I promised to take her to NYC tomorrow for her two hour wait. There are about 100 people in line, so I’m assuming that we’ll get one. She says that I still have to take her to NYC even if we don’t get one. What she doesn’t know is that I want to go into the city tomorrow anyway:)

I placed an order for one 32GB and one 64GB iPad in the wee hours of the morning and was excited to see the 3-5 day ship date. However, I just received a cancellation notice from Apple because “there is a limited quantity per customer for this product and your order has exceeded this limit”. The website says two per order. Man am I disappointed and vexed.
