Apple has confirmed that it will begin accepting online pre-orders for the iPad at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time/8:30 a.m. Eastern Time tomorrow, TUAW reports. According to Apple’s prior announcement, U.S. customers will be able to pre-order both the Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + 3G models of the device, or reserve a Wi-Fi-only model for pick up at an Apple retail store. Apple will officially launch the Wi-Fi-only version of the iPad in the U.S. on Saturday, April 3, with Wi-Fi + 3G models expected to ship in late April.

What does “reserve a Wi-Fi-only model for pick up at an Apple retail store”? Is that still using a credit card? If so, is the charge actually applied at time of “reserve” or when picked up from the store on April 3?

Anybody who buys this thing before iPhone OS 4.0 is unveiled is a fool (I speak as a fairly happy iPhone 3GS user).

Ω (or more accurately, ω) is, of course, correct: there’s no way the iPad will be software-upgradeable, and thus waiting for iPhone OS 4.0 is the only sane option.
Oh, wait…

Please expand - why wouldn’t it be upgradeable? Even the iPod touches are upgradeable right? (Although sometimes there’s a fee, I believe?)

I was speaking purely facetiously. I don’t understand the mindset that argues that until the iPad is the perfect device, it’s foolish to purchase one.
