iPhone 3G queue forms in NYC, display details emerge

The first iPhone 3G line formed over the weekend outside Apple’s flagship retail store on 5th Avenue in New York City. This same store, known for its glass cube entryway, was the location of the first line for the original iPhone last June. The first five people in line are part of an environmental activist group and are hoping to use their places in line to gain publicity for their cause.
In addition, large, full-window iPhone 3G displays have begun arriving at Apple retail stores. Similar to the in-store displays for the first-generation iPhone, the new fixtures consist of a display which resembles a giant iPhone 3G, running a demo of the phone’s software in front of a cardboard backdrop.

Peter,
Actually, a baby was brought to the line by its parents, and the cop came to send the baby home. The line dwindled from ten people down to five, most likely due to rain in the area.

WTF??? Cant you just show up. Buy the phone then go home? Whats the deal? I figured it wasn’t going to be like the first release of the iPhone. I want one as I am shopping for a cell but if the line is going around the block I’ll just walk into Verizon.

Its so funny to me that people who read a techie website would call others who are fans of some hot hardware a freak. i for one am glad the fan base for apple and iphones is strong, makes for good PR for the brand i like, and makes possible informative sites like this one. i have friends that wait days and nights in line for football, basketball, concert tix, bands showin up at Amoeba, comicon. it’s kind of an event, not like my dads events, for sure, but fun for some. and, as the guy says, if you don’t like the event and absolutely must have it on the first day, check out other stores with other products down the street. All depends on what you want. If you want it with no wait, then go the second day it comes out.
