iPhone App Store hits 10 million downloads
iPhone and iPod touch users have downloaded more than 10 million applications from the App Store since its launch late last week, Apple has announced. The store, which launched with over 500 applications, now offers more than 800 apps, with more than 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent priced at less than $10. “The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

I’m surprised that they have enough people with working computers and devices after the 7.7/2.0 upgrade to warrant that many downloads. I would have had a more efficient weekend by strapping dynamite to my Touch and lighting the fuse. Probably would have been easier to get back in working order afterwards.
What I’d love is an App that allows my Touch to work as it did last Friday.

Even WITH the carefully controlled quality application from the App Store I’ve had several crashes since the weekend on my iPhone. I can only image what a mess it would be if it were ‘open season’ for any body who fancies developing an app.
I can see the wisdom of Apple’s decision to be gatekeeper to the iPhone - I want my phone to work as a phone FIRST AND FOREMOST, as an iPod second, and as a platform for third party apps thirdmost. Can you imagine the backlash there would be if people were downloading unstable apps that were badly effecting performance and battery life of their iPhones ?

The upgrade to 2.0 on my iPod Touch worked in one go, albeit a lengthy one. Nevertheless 2.0 hasn’t stopped Safari from crashing every now and then. Actually my coverflow even crashed once yesterday. Other than that nothing but praise for the new apps, especially Remote.
