The iPhone may be launching in Mexico, and possibly some South American countries, in June, according to a report from major Mexican newspaper El Universal. Citing sources within Apple, as well as conversations with Apple Support, the paper reports [Translated link] that the handset will arrive in June on Telcel in Mexico, and may also launch around the same time in other unspecified South American countries. According to the report, the phone may be priced around 33% higher than it is in the United States, meaning that a 16GB iPhone would sell for around 7,400 pesos. Apple has yet to officially announce any iPhone roll-outs for the region. [via MDN]

How do they expect to sell them and make money in Latin America if it will be priced 33% higher than here the United States.  If it is expensive for us, it will be out of reach for most in South America.

AT LAST!

If it is expensive for us, it will be out of reach for most in South America.
Yes INDEED. Although JOGran is absolutely right, among other things, buying electronics in México (and I bet in other countries as well) has always been expensive, so this is not the exception. People are going to buy the iPhone because they have realized that Apple delivers quality products, and where I live, people try to keep an “image” with the products they buy, so I can tell you the iPhone will be a hit.
For all those suckers who bought an iPhone in the States and are paying their data connections as they go, it is time to sell it back on eBay, sorry I mean, Mercadolibre.com.

I don’t think price is a problem here in Mexico. I’ve seen BlackBerries from 5000 to 12000 pesos and they sell. Not to mention that the people buying the cracked/patched iPhones are paying a lot more for them without any type of service or upgrades.

Been trying in vain to get an official response from Apple’s Mexico City office, just to launch an iTunes Music Store in the country, a necessity for the iPhone. So, first things first. If they do come through for us all and launch the product in Mexico, God bless ‘em. ...sadly, they will only enrich Slim - Forbes “world’s richest” - and maintain its market dominance/control if indeed they work with Telcel. :-(

I agree with John, we want a itunes store here in Mexico.
The price will not be an issue for the purchase of an iphone, although I am sure that the plans are going to be much more expensive in the long run.
